Review

"German-born Gini Youngkrantz is such a good cook that she can't entertain without guests asking for her recipes.

They wondered how she goes about making her cabbage and potatoes, her homemade German noodles and her stollens.

...Her first edition came out in 1986 and she continues to update and add new recipes. The fourth and most recent edition contains the bread recipes she had been reluctant to include.

'Bread is the hardest, that's why I never put the bread recipes in the book,' she said. 'Even when I made the bread, I had to do it more than once.'

But the majority of the recipes are simple and her directions, easy to follow..." -- Belleville News-Democrat, Belleville, IL

"New book helps Americans to cook like Germans do

Gini Youngkrantz, who grew up in Heidelberg, Germany, and is married to a retired American serviceman, published her first edition of her cookbook 'Authentic German Home Style Recipes' in 1986.

She and her husband Bob printed 1,000 copies, and when the book was reviewed by the Army Times, a military newspaper, copies sold out in record time. Since then more than 52,000 copies of Youngkrantz's cookbook have been sold in the United States and Germany. Most are sold in military-post and base exchanges. In Germany, the book is on the best-seller category.

...'It's a simple book - with recipes that are easy and don't need any special ingredients,' she explained." -- The Gazette, Colorado Springs, CO

...Youngkrantz's secret is that she keeps the recipes simple. All call for ingredients that can be purchsed in the States at any grocery or supermarket.

She shows how Germans prepare asparagus, carrots and potatoes and potato pancakes. Meat dishes include fried sausage, meat loaf, chicken in nut breading, fish in mustard gravy and goulash. There are also casseroles and, of course, desserts. Anthing with strawberries are her favorite..." -- The Stars and Stripes, Europe

4.0 out of 5 stars A delightful book, April 26 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Authentic German Home Style Recipes (Plastic Comb)
I bought this book at Milwaukee's Germanfest several years ago, and I consider it a lucky find. The quotes and information about German holidays and customs, are just delightful! And the recipes bring back many memories of time we spent in Germany.

It is worth getting the book for the brötchen recipe alone. We thought we'd never see good brötchen outside of Germany. Now we can make it at home!

I especially appreciated having this book when I was preparing holiday meals for my now-late German-born father-in-law. He was very pleased as well.

The recipes are easy to follow and use ingredients that are easy to find in America. The binding allows you to open the book and lay it down flat - very handy while you're cooking.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, Dec 18 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Authentic German Home Style Recipes (Plastic Comb)
This cookbook is equivalent to a Junior League collection of recipes from Midwest, USA. Ingredients such as margarine, hot dogs, garlic salt, dried mixed vegetables, cheddar cheese, and abundant use of bouillon cubes reflect a cook who has not progressed beyond elementary food preparation skill.
The formatting of the "self published" book is not easy to read and inconsistent. Accompanying tips, quotes and histories are out of place.
I would imagine though that the books reflects a certain kind of German cooking, just not one I'd want any part of.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally !!!, Feb 24 2003

Finally, a cookbook that contains the recipes for some of the foods that I grew up with. I highly recommend this book. The first recipe I tried was the mischbrot. WOW!!! It turned out exactly as I remembered the fresh and aromatic loaf of bread that I picked up from the neighborhood baker in Germany. All of the other recipes are faithfully authentic (from my point of view) even tho some do not include the necessary caraway seeds.
