Book Description

Dec 12 1946
Autobiography of a Yogi is at once a beautifully written account of an exceptional life and a profound introduction to the ancient science of Yoga and its time-honored tradition of meditation. This acclaimed autobiography presents a fascinating portrait of one of the great spiritual figures of our time. With engaging candor, eloquence, and wit, Paramahansa Yogananda tells the inspiring chronicle of his life: the experiences of his remarkable childhood, encounter with many saints and sages during his youthful search throughout India for an illumined teacher, ten years of training in the hermitage of a revered yoga master, and the thirty years that he lived and taught in America. Also recorded here are his meetings with Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, Luther Burbank, the Catholic stigmatist Therese Neumann, and other celebrated spiritual personalities of East and West. The author clearly explains the subtle but definite laws behind both the ordinary events of everyday life and the extraordinary events commonly termed miracles. His absorbing life story becomes the background for a penetrating and unforgettable look at the ultimate mysteries of human existence. Selected as "One of the 100 Best Spiritual Books of the Twentieth Century," Autobiography of a Yogi has been translated into 20 languages, and is regarded worldwide as a classic of religious literature. Several million copies have been sold, and it continues to appear on best-seller lists after more than sixty consecutive years in print. Profoundly inspiring, it is at the same time vastly entertaining, warmly humorous and filled with extraordinary personages. Self-Realization Fellowship's editions, and none others, include extensive material added by the author after the first edition was published, including a final chapter on the closing years of his life.

About the Author

Born in India on January 5, 1893, Paramahansa Yogananda devoted his life to helping people of all races and creeds to realize and express more fully in their lives the true beauty, nobility, and divinity of the human spirit. After graduating from Calcutta University in 1915, Sri Yogananda took formal vows as a monk of India's venerable monastic Swami Order. Two years later, he began his life's work with the founding of a how-to-live school since grown to twenty-one educational institutions throughout India where traditional academic subjects were offered together with yoga training and instruction in spiritual ideals. In 1920, he was invited to serve as India's delegate to an International Congress of Religious Liberals in Boston. His address to the Congress and subsequent lectures on the East Coast were enthusiastically received, and in 1924 he embarked on a cross-continental speaking tour. Over the next three decades, Paramahansa Yogananda contributed in far-reaching ways to a greater awareness and appreciation in the West of the spiritual wisdom of the East. In Los Angeles, he established an international headquarters for Self-Realization Fellowship, the nonsectarian religious society he had founded in 1920. Through his writings, extensive lecture tours, and the creation of Self-Realization Fellowship temples and meditation centers, he introduced hundreds of thousands of truth-seekers to the ancient science and philosophy of Yoga and its universally applicable methods of meditation. Today, the spiritual and humanitarian work begun by Paramahansa Yogananda continues under the direction of Sri Mrinalini Mata, one of his closest disciples and president of Self-Realization Fellowship/Yogoda Satsanga Society of India since 2011. In addition to publishing his writings, lectures and informal talks (including a comprehensive series of Self-Realization Fellowship Lessons for home study), the society also oversees temples, retreats, and centers around the world.

This is a life-changing book. When I felt at my worst, this book helped heal and redeem me. It put me back on the path of spirituality and seeking conscious experince of the Divine through meditation and right life. I had been scared off of God through my mother's religion and my father's lack of it. My mother often used "God" to scare me into doing what she wanted. When I left her, I fell to pieces and this book was my sanctuary in showing me another world within the world we already live in. We are actually dying in this world but this book teaches you how to truly live. The only challenge, as with anything, is to apply the lessons and experiences described in this book into everyday life until it is habit. Once you can do this, you will live a life most Divine. A life full of happiness and free of fear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eye Opener May 8 2003
Format:Hardcover
I love this book. It's a book that I read in a short amount of time, because I could not put it down. In parts it weaves eastern mysticism with the Bible. I loved it so much that I signed up with the Self Realization Fellowship for the lessons. So I can learn how to do the Kriya yoga meditation that's mentioned in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yogananda Lives! Jan. 13 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I've read "Autobiography of a Yogi" many times over the last twenty years and have learned something new each time. After much self-doubt and hesitation over the years, I decided to attend Self-Realization's yearly Convocation in Los Angeles in June of 2000. I expected nothing since I felt I hadn't worked hard enough in the past "to deserve" any "blessing". On a trip to the Lake Shrine in Pacific Palisades, I was oddly drawn to the houseboat where the Master meditated for many hours during the Shrine's construction. After sitting calmly for ten minutes or so I felt a peace I've never felt before (or since). When I opened my eyes, YOGANANDA WAS STANDING THERE--not in a dream or an hallucination--but right in front of me like a living person would! He smiled and said "...just try harder!". Then he slowly dissolved into a mist of white. What can I say? He still "lives" and cares about even the "weakest" of us. Read the book and see for yourself!

5.0 out of 5 stars My eternal companion!! Nov. 23 2000
Format:Paperback
Hi All! What should write about this book??? I am not getting the matching words to explain the thrill & joy that I experience whenever I even visualize this book.... I could not keep track of how many times I have read this book .... Whenever I feel free from wordly duty I read this book, it make me forget everything. India has given so many things to the world in the area of spirituality and I found that this book is one of those best things. This book gave me the insight to look in other religions.
Whenever I pick up this book I just open any page and start reading...... each and every word, line and page make me cry with joy!!
This book has transformed millions of lives. I believe if a literate person hasn't read this book he has not utilised his this life to know and experience something special . This book doesnot require a person to be religious to read this. Just I cann't say more than .... "This is the best book ever written to change a person's state of being."

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish I could have met him Sept. 28 2001
Format:Paperback
A friend gave me this book. I read it and was struck by the absolute intelligence and candidness of the author.
But without reading any other books about spirituality and exploring on my own, I began to meditate daily as Paramahansa Yogananda describes. One day I focused and I completely lost all the worry and weight I carry with me. It was as if I detached from some heavy framework I drape my soul on.
It only lasted a moment but I have never forgotten the joy and lightness of the experience.
Paramahansa Yogananda says in this book that the reason Westerners do not experience the joy of being one with their spirits is because they do not discipline themselves. They do not want to take the time to meditate. At times (many times) he would meditate for 8 hours!
All I know is with diligence I had a supernatural experience.
His ideas for teaching children are light years away from what our kids experience in public schools in America.
How I wish that people like him were in leadership positions on our planet.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1946 edition was changed by Yogananda. Nov. 30 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Paramahansa Yogananda, the great world prophet who wrote the Autobiography of a Yogi. Trained Tara Mata and Mrinalini Mata as his editors in chiefs. But before he left, he was the one that began the trend of making changes in the Autobiography. His successors also made other changes as more understanding was gained on just what his central teaching was really about, and from instructions left by Him. This 1946 edition is not Yoganada's best and final work, this will become clear by reading the latest editions of his works published by Self-Realization Fellowship. The only organization started by Yogananda as the central place from which he wanted all of his work and teachings to be disseminated and published. Reading the "originals" may seem romantic and dogmatic. But the real Yogananda will be found in his later editions, which are enhanced by his ever growing consciousness. Beware of those who would insist on the master's "originals". A word which seems to be misunderstood by its promoters. That original edition was not even entirely edited by Yogananda, but by Tara Mata. Like a great artist giving His masterpiece the finishing touches, his later works become better and better. Thus He also revised other works as time permitted.
Also recommended; Inner Peace; Wine of the Mystic; God Talks with Arjuna(Bhagavad Gita), Only Love, Finding the Joy Within You; Man's Eternal quest, Journey to Self-Realization, The Divine Romance. Whispers from Eternity, The Science of Religion.
