Book Description

Dec 12 1946
Autobiography of a Yogi is at once a beautifully written account of an exceptional life and a profound introduction to the ancient science of Yoga and its time-honored tradition of meditation. This acclaimed autobiography presents a fascinating portrait of one of the great spiritual figures of our time. With engaging candor, eloquence, and wit, Paramahansa Yogananda tells the inspiring chronicle of his life: the experiences of his remarkable childhood, encounter with many saints and sages during his youthful search throughout India for an illumined teacher, ten years of training in the hermitage of a revered yoga master, and the thirty years that he lived and taught in America. Also recorded here are his meetings with Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, Luther Burbank, the Catholic stigmatist Therese Neumann, and other celebrated spiritual personalities of East and West. The author clearly explains the subtle but definite laws behind both the ordinary events of everyday life and the extraordinary events commonly termed miracles. His absorbing life story becomes the background for a penetrating and unforgettable look at the ultimate mysteries of human existence. Selected as "One of the 100 Best Spiritual Books of the Twentieth Century," Autobiography of a Yogi has been translated into 20 languages, and is regarded worldwide as a classic of religious literature. Several million copies have been sold, and it continues to appear on best-seller lists after more than sixty consecutive years in print. Profoundly inspiring, it is at the same time vastly entertaining, warmly humorous and filled with extraordinary personages. Self-Realization Fellowship's editions, and none others, include extensive material added by the author after the first edition was published, including a final chapter on the closing years of his life.

About the Author

Born in India on January 5, 1893, Paramahansa Yogananda devoted his life to helping people of all races and creeds to realize and express more fully in their lives the true beauty, nobility, and divinity of the human spirit. After graduating from Calcutta University in 1915, Sri Yogananda took formal vows as a monk of India's venerable monastic Swami Order. Two years later, he began his life's work with the founding of a how-to-live school since grown to twenty-one educational institutions throughout India where traditional academic subjects were offered together with yoga training and instruction in spiritual ideals. In 1920, he was invited to serve as India's delegate to an International Congress of Religious Liberals in Boston. His address to the Congress and subsequent lectures on the East Coast were enthusiastically received, and in 1924 he embarked on a cross-continental speaking tour. Over the next three decades, Paramahansa Yogananda contributed in far-reaching ways to a greater awareness and appreciation in the West of the spiritual wisdom of the East. In Los Angeles, he established an international headquarters for Self-Realization Fellowship, the nonsectarian religious society he had founded in 1920. Through his writings, extensive lecture tours, and the creation of Self-Realization Fellowship temples and meditation centers, he introduced hundreds of thousands of truth-seekers to the ancient science and philosophy of Yoga and its universally applicable methods of meditation. Today, the spiritual and humanitarian work begun by Paramahansa Yogananda continues under the direction of Sri Mrinalini Mata, one of his closest disciples and president of Self-Realization Fellowship/Yogoda Satsanga Society of India since 2011. In addition to publishing his writings, lectures and informal talks (including a comprehensive series of Self-Realization Fellowship Lessons for home study), the society also oversees temples, retreats, and centers around the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yogananda Lives! Jan. 13 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I've read "Autobiography of a Yogi" many times over the last twenty years and have learned something new each time. After much self-doubt and hesitation over the years, I decided to attend Self-Realization's yearly Convocation in Los Angeles in June of 2000. I expected nothing since I felt I hadn't worked hard enough in the past "to deserve" any "blessing". On a trip to the Lake Shrine in Pacific Palisades, I was oddly drawn to the houseboat where the Master meditated for many hours during the Shrine's construction. After sitting calmly for ten minutes or so I felt a peace I've never felt before (or since). When I opened my eyes, YOGANANDA WAS STANDING THERE--not in a dream or an hallucination--but right in front of me like a living person would! He smiled and said "...just try harder!". Then he slowly dissolved into a mist of white. What can I say? He still "lives" and cares about even the "weakest" of us. Read the book and see for yourself!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Skeptic's Thanks July 8 2001
Format:Paperback
It is no small feat to admit that this book changed my life, but in many ways, it has. I've never been a so-called spiritual person, nor a great believer in anything mystical, or beyond what most of us consider reality; being a non-practicing Catholic for a number of years, I have since become somewhat of a convert. It is due in part to a conscious searching for something higher, but I consider Paramhansa Yogananda's magnificent autobiography the greatest catalyst in my newly established path to spiritual freedom. It is a great mind opener, it is entertaining and, I believe, accessible to anyone willing to listen. I am practicing yoga almost every day now and I am going to church again. I have found something better than what society considers the most desirable rewards. I have found the deeper meaning of love and I encourage people to set aside their skepticism, take a chance, and learn about the meaning of life.

3.0 out of 5 stars A spiritual classic, but filled with distractions April 16 2002
By Shran
Format:Paperback
I came across this book by way of Jon Anderson's liner notes from the Yes album "Tales from Topographic Oceans," which he says he formulated after getting caught up in a footnote about the four-part shastras in Yogananda's book. (See the chapter called "I Meet My Master, Sri Yukteswar.") I never got around to reading the book until just this year, and though I can certainly see its influence on "Topographic Oceans," I found the book to be a mixed bag overall.
"Autobiography of a Yogi" is certainly an enjoyable account of one man's life and travels in India and later the West, as he works out his own spiritual quest and eventually chooses to share his hard-won knowledge with the rest of the world. The greatest strength of Yogananda's book is not his storytelling talents, though; it is rather that the book possesses the ability to open receptive Westerners to a new and perhaps more harmonious spiritual way of thinking--one that is inclusive, undoubtedly with Hindu roots but uniting disparate religious beliefs into a direct experience of the "ultimate" that transcends individual dogmas, precisely by showing that those dogmas are really no more than different paths to the same destination. His fresh interpretations of the Bible, from an Eastern/Hindu point of view but transcending both Eastern and Western traditions into a dynamic unity of new spiritual thought, illustrates this approach nicely. If nothing else, it may leave the Judeo-Christian with a fresh perspective on his own religious beliefs.

5.0 out of 5 stars My eternal companion!! Nov. 23 2000
Format:Paperback
Hi All! What should write about this book??? I am not getting the matching words to explain the thrill & joy that I experience whenever I even visualize this book.... I could not keep track of how many times I have read this book .... Whenever I feel free from wordly duty I read this book, it make me forget everything. India has given so many things to the world in the area of spirituality and I found that this book is one of those best things. This book gave me the insight to look in other religions.
Whenever I pick up this book I just open any page and start reading...... each and every word, line and page make me cry with joy!!
This book has transformed millions of lives. I believe if a literate person hasn't read this book he has not utilised his this life to know and experience something special . This book doesnot require a person to be religious to read this. Just I cann't say more than .... "This is the best book ever written to change a person's state of being."

5.0 out of 5 stars God March 11 2013

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I read this originally in the 70s and loved it then and love it now. An amazing book and if true, and I don't think Yoganada was a liar, our possibilities are limitless and water can be changed into wine and a man can walk on water and perhaps even raise himself from the dead.
