Book Description

Aug 15 2010 Sports Illustrated Kids Graphic Novels

Rich kid Tony Jay is a shoe-in to win the Silver Falls snowboarding tournament, but his biggest competition, Jack Hewlitt, can't afford to enter. Tony may be spoiled, but he knows that victory means nothing if you don't beat the best. So, he agrees to hold a one-on-one freestyle run with Jack atop the Silver Falls Mountains. But just when things start to heat up, a massive avalanche threatens to put both boys on ice, turning their friendly competition into a race for their lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding High-Low Reader Oct 14 2010
By Nicola Manning HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Outstanding illustrations by a (former?) Marvel comics illustrator. The book has been professionally drawn and styled and it shows. This is definitely a high-low reader, with a reading level of 0.9 and interest level up to 14 yo. The plot is basic in scope: rich boy & poor boy are both awesome snowboarders but poor boy can't afford to enter competition. Poor kid has aggressive attitude to rich kid. Rich kid is actually a nice dude who is impressed with the other's skills but rich kid is surrounded by "friends" who all want something from him because of his status. Danger happens and the two teens learn about true friendship and good sportsmanship to boot. How the story actually plays out in the book is very well done, and while the "lesson" is obviously there, it doesn't stick out during the reading of the book. The teens are presented very well, speaking and acting just like real-life teens (keeping in mind that Stone Arch only prints family friendly material). I recommend this book and while I still have one more book in the series to review I'll go out on a limb and say the whole series is likely to be worthy of recommendation.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Great Page Turner" Jan 27 2013
By L.Davis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
"Avalanche Freestyle" is a graphic novel about a 15 year-old boy, Tony Jay, whose father owns a ski resort and is hosting a ski boarding tournament for the prize "Troublemaker" the ultimate ski board. Tony (aka the rich kid) thinks he has the competition in the bag until his dad's maintenance man's son Jack Hewlitt shows him he's just as good as him. Tony struggles with knowing his friends only like him for his dad's money and can get from him. His thoughts are confirmed when he and his friends go to a remote spot that no knows about to practice for the tournament. Jack and Tony face off in a battle of show boarding to see once and for all who is best. When an avalanche. nearly kills the boys, Tony's friends take off with all the aid supplies, leaving him to the deep snow. Jack turned back to help Tony and another avalanche threatens to take their lives again. The boy's realize they both have been acting foolish by stereotyping each other. Will the boy's make it home alive? And who will win the ultimate ski board?

This book is very entertaining for children who like graphic novels and sports. The back of the book tells about the author, illustrator, has a glossary, and a web site to find more books like this one. There is an AR test available for this book too. I read it with my oldest son who loves graphic novels and we enjoyed it a lot.
