Busiek's goodbye., April 15 2009
By Busby - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Avengers Assemble - Volume 5 (Hardcover)
"Avengers Assemble" volume 5 sees the titanic run of writer/comic historian/"Avengers" fanboy Kurt Busiek come to what i feel is an absolutely dynamite close!
fans of the "Avengers Forever" limited series (my favorite superhero comic of all time) will be oh-so-happy to learn that Kang is back, and back for the throw-down to end all in the form of a whopping 15-part mega-arc which depicts "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" mightiest ever battle with (for my dime) the most drastically underrated villain in all of comics.
if you enjoyed Busiek's magnificent resurrection of Ultron all the way back in vol. 2, prepare to lovingly sink your teeth into this return as well, for "The Kang Dynasty" (or "Kang War". whichever you prefer, really) is every bit as good (and possibly even superior) to "Ultron Unlimited". believe it or not, it really is that good.
i hate the idea of note-for-noting this work to death, so i will close now so as to save you the worry of "spoilers". if, for some reason, you haven't quite completed your Busiek "Avengers" collection and are waiting for a thumb's-up on vol. 5, please consider this it.
if you have never read a single word of Busiek's "Avengers", well, if you wanna start at vol. 1, i understand, but i'll tell you what: since vol. 2 is out of print...
(can't wait for the 2012 "Avengers" movie, so everything can be re-printed.) : )
...for a straight-up, awesome, "Avengers"-sized epic, nab a copy of vol. 5 and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy! yes, there are several series-spanning arcs that conclude here, and while i find coming in halfway-through to be a bit jarring, this will not derail the fun of this read in any way.
again friends, enjoy!
* "Avengers Assemble" book 5 collects "The Avengers" volume 3 (1997), nos. 41-56 + "Avengers Annual 2001".

Very Good, Dec 31 2007

Though it's very long and in some parts poorly drawn, this compilation showing Kang's final stand is very well written. You find romance, laughing, thrilling, drama and a lot of action in it. And a lot of inactive avengers take part of the story as well, for the delight of fans who can see again Stingray, Black Knight and others.
