I was (and still am) a huge Marvel fan, and I returned to reading these comics with the Disassembled-House of M stories. These two HC books are really rewarding and entertaining. The artwork is excellent, and some of the drawings of the Scarlet Witch, Magneto, and Quicksilver must be instant classics. The writing is also very good, and the storyline itself keeps you thinking long after the book is over. Dr. Strange aptly comments (later on in Avengers 26) that the Scarlet Witch's saga, and that of the entire mutant world, is a tragedy with a kind of Shakespearean ring to it. This is quite true I find, meaning that the story is not just about the action and the characters, but applies rather poetically to ourselves as well: our needs, vulnerabilities, and desires, and the way these things can combine together to both elevate us as well as destroy us.
It has made me curious about the pre-history to these events, actually, and I've been enjoying some of the earlier Avengers mags too.
Highly recommended.

This was my first look at high-profile writer Bendis. He's the genuine article. Respect for the characters, for the continuity and for long-time/first-time readers is readily apparent. The story begins with a shock, then builds gracefully to an emotionally charged ending. The art is also superior, though I concentrate on the writing because that is usually the weaker component in comics stories. Not this time.
