Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Bantock's (Griffin & Sabine) light verse is enhanced by his color illustrations in this small, fetching book. As an example, look at his painting of a befanged, richly chestnut-colored dog, muzzle soft and thick with wrinkles; the accompanying poem is "Dog Tired," seven lines of sly complaint from a narrator who's being bitten by the dog in question. "The Warrior's Way," about a "highly toxic Warrior fly" and the fly's offing by a human with a swatter, accompanies the image of a purple-and-black-striped creature who has been split in half and surrounded by minuscule blood spatters. The color's rewarding; so is Bantock's graphic precision in words and pictures. One of the most deft poems is "Unthinking Drinking," about a small fish aswim in a glass of whiskey who survives a 40-day drunk only to burst from the glass and perish.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sly...., Nov 25 2004

If you liked the subversiveness of Ogden Nash, you'll love these beastly little verses! Plus, the presentation is exquisite: Shiny purple box with a wicked-looking rabbit behind the wheel of a car on the cover, opening up to two hidden compartments, one each for the cassette and book, each compartment whimiscally illustrated with bull dogs and ducks! NICE.

5.0 out of 5 stars Further ramblings from the artist/poet, July 1 1998

In this now out of print volume, Bantock explores the spoken word. For anyone who has enjoyed the visual stimuli of the Griffin & Sabine books, or the mesmerizing narrative of The Venitian' Wife, or the Forgetting Room. The poetry calls to mind a more off-beat Shel Silverstein. Highly recommended.
