Awakening: The Art of Halo 4 is an amazing book for Halo fans. Published by Titan Books, The Art of Halo 4 contains 192 pages of art work from various stages of the game's development compiled by Paul Davies with a foreword written by Kenneth Scott, the Senior Art Director at 343 Industries.

The Art of Halo 4 is organized into five chapters: Environments, UNSC, Covenant, Forerunner, and War Games. Each chapter is then further broken down into specific sub-chapters. For example, weapons, vehicles, and characters each have their own sections. This allows readers to quickly flip to the part of the book that most interests them. Want to see some cool Forerunner character designs? Turn to page 146. Want to take a look at some of the new UNSC vehicles like the Mantis? Go to page 110. It is very well organized.

The War Games chapter is especially interesting as it provides a glance at the challenges the development team faced when designing multiplayer environments and player armor variants.

The art itself is absolutely beautiful. Images range from full page artwork to concept sketches to character renders. Captions on each image provide deeper insight into Halo 4's development process and the Halo universe in general.

Measuring at roughly 9" x 12," this book is pretty big. It is more fitting for a coffee table rather than a book shelf. But Awakening: The Art of Halo 4 is something that all die hard Halo fans will want as part of their collection.

As awesome as the game is the art behind it is amazing. Very good reference if you're an artist trying to come up with your own concepts. I'm a pro artist that works in the entertainment industry and I highly recommend it.

Sci-fi art galore Nov. 23 2012
By Parka - Published on
Format: Hardcover
Halo 4 is back with a bang and this is an excellent video game art book for it.

It's a large 192-page hardcover published by Titan Books. Each page is filled with lavish concept art printed huge, sometimes across two pages. There's a good amount of environment paintings that look really great because they are printed so big -- great for soaking in the ambiance. The environment paintings are easily the highlight of the book. I love the very physical look of the designs. And those with wide open spaces look majestic.

Other concept art include designs for Master Chief, Cortana, Spartans, troops, Forerunners, weapons, vehicles and ships. They are all amazing and detailed. It will take a while to look through the art.

There are several artbooks for Halo, and this is one of the best, and one of my 2012 favourite artbooks as well.

Fantastic concept art book.

Highly recommended for Halo fans.

A Visually Stunning Companion to the Game Nov. 13 2012
By Matthew S Baker - Published on
Format: Hardcover
In honor of the recent release of the Halo 4 game, I thought it only appropriate to review this amazing book today. I have been a HUGE fan of the Halo series, ever since the first game came out years ago. The action, the weapons, the is an amazing series that is beyond captivating. But it's not just the actual game itself that pleases; the Halo universe is one of the most vivid and interesting locales in which to place a storyline. Such can be seen in the detail placed into the graphics for each game. Halo 4 breaks new ground by giving much more detail in these graphics as well as a rich plot to go along with it. Thanks to Titan Books, fans like me can now revel in the concept art that helped bring Halo 4 to life.

If you are any kind of fan of Halo, then this book is a must-buy for you. AWAKENING: THE ART OF HALO 4 takes you deep into the mindset of the designers at 343 Industries, and shows how their ideas evolved into the excellent game that was released just last week.

With stunning imagery and exquisite detail, the concept art in this book will leave you almost as breathless as the game itself. The pictures are lavish and rich, portraying the new world and realm in which the Master Chief finds himself this time. And I have to say, these images are the very definition of beautiful.

The imaginations involved with creating such complex yet lavish scenes must be staggeringly powerful. The fine folks at 343 Industries have raised the bar and set a new level of excellence with this work. AWAKENING: THE ART OF HALO 4 chronicles part of the work involved, by giving in-depth but short commentaries on each scene and the mentality behind it.

Comparing the concept art to the scenes in the game (which I have done quite a bit) is a lot of fun. It's very interesting to see how different the final graphics can turn out, even after being fleshed out with a brush. But nonetheless, the core elements in almost every scene are there and spring vividly to life.

But aside from the visuals, AWAKENING: THE ART OF HALO 4 gives us a sneak-peek at new characters, creatures, and items that can be found in the game. The book also fleshes out existing characters and creatures by providing new, finer details to their images. This provides double the excitement, as it feels like visiting old friends who have changed due to time.

AWAKENING: THE ART OF HALO 4 is an amazing book and it definitely belongs in your collection. Even if you are not a Halo fan, you should check this volume out, as it has some of the most amazing landscape artwork you'll ever see. The images within its pages are inspiring and mesmerizing; and they might just convince you to play the game as well. Give this one a look.

Brilliant artwork - A must have in your library for Sci-fi/Gamer fans alike Nov. 28 2012
By Jimmy Kim - Published on
Format: Hardcover
I must say that this product surprised me. I've owned many artwork books before and they were simply pictures and a few explanations but this one is quite different.

Each panel and artwork is accompanied by the importance and significance of the artwork and what it means to the production team and us, the gamers and fans.

This book is a perfect gift for the individual who is infatuated with the Haloverse. But I would make sure that you bought them Halo 4 first! Halo 4
BOOK REVIEW - Awakening: The Art of Halo 4 April 8 2014
By Shaun Patterson - Published on
Format: Hardcover
Hello and welcome to my review of Awakening: The Art of Halo 4, published by Titan Books. First off let me say that I am not, nor have I ever been a big Halo fan boy. While I do purchase and enjoy the Halo series of games, you will not see me bleary eyed and grinding levels in multiplayer death match at 3am on a Wednesday night.

For those who may have been previously unaware, the video games studio Bungie had been making the Halo series since its inception. Now the torch has been passed to 343 Industries, who have created this current episode in what I am assuming is a never ending series of Halo games that will extend to the end of days. With a new game studio, comes an art team with a fresh new take on the material. This new direction and palatable excitement felt by this art team is an immediate standout point in this book.

As with other “Art Of” Books, this one has a usual break down of concept art, 2D Production/Marketing art and 3D assets. The book has a robust offering in each of these areas and the viewer gets to a see a real mix of production quality illustration, down to very quick and dirty concepts. As a video game artist myself, I always dislike when books gloss over the development process by making it look like every concept artist has the luxury of sitting around and creating 30 hour illustrations for use as concept art. The truth is that no doubt, this art team was pumping the images out at a fever pace and it really shows.

The book breaks down the visual style by the various races; the UNSC, the Covenant and the Forerunners. By this stage the Halo series, the aesthetic of the UNSC and their classic enemy the Covenant is very well established. The art team added nice additions to these classic looks, with updated armor styles for the multiplayer and improved weapon and vehicle design.

The Forerunner visual style is a welcome addition to the Halo universe and is nicely showcased in the book. Hi tech and angular lines, mixed with an orange and grey color pallet that tie it altogether.
As someone whom also works in 3D as well, I wish that the book had contained more 3d assets in terms of ZBrush sculpts and the like. This is something that you tend to see much more in animated movie “Making Of” books, and would be nice to see more of in these video game genre books as well.

Awakening: The Art of Halo 4 is certainly a welcome addition to my personal collection and is definitely for you, if you are a Halo Fan boy/girl, a collector of video game concept art books or just a lover of high quality genre art in general.
A visionary experience, almost hard to believe it's all fiction. Feb. 9 2013
By Robert Gray - Published on
Format: Hardcover
Halo has been around for quite some time now. I still remember seeing the first Halo trailer, when it was planned to be a Mac game... Yes, it's been a while and Halo has come to be one of the biggest console franchises ever since. One thing all Halo games (and movies, books etc...) have in common is the spectacular, well crafted sci-fi universe they are set in.

Halo 4 set out on a mission similar to that of the first Halo game: Halo 4 is an adventure, deep into an unkown world, uncharted by mankind, so alien yet so beautiful in display, that you can only admire its presentation.

The accompanying hardcover art book Awekening: The Art of Halo 4 has 192 pages and features 5 chapters: Environments, UNSC, Covenant, Forerunner and War Games. Each chapter speaks for itself, the later (War Games) is dedicated to the game's multiplayer environments and war assets. The book depicts a wide variety of art fidelity, ranging from scribbles and scetches to beautiful full feature drawings, I'd seriously consider to put them on my wall, if I had the space. Almost every page has a few lines of explanation. Only few pieces of art have some kind of caption to it, other than the artists name - but credit where credit is due!

Just like the game, Awakening: The Art of Halo 4 takes you on an adventure to another world, only to make you realize how a dedicated game development art team, can craft a visionary experience, almost hard to believe it's all fiction. You should definately get this book if you are a Halo fan and it's a must have for all art book fans.
