Some of the Best Comics...Period. Sept. 11 2011
By John Boman - Published on
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
I purchased the first volume of the new B.P.R.D. collections when it was initially released and it did not disappoint. Having been a long time Mike Mignola fan, I had never dipped my toes into the ongoing B.P.R.D. book. I waited with great enthusiasm for the second volume and once again I am not disappointed. We have a glorious hardback edition that showcases one of my favourite artists wonderful line work, Mr Guy Davis. You could buy this book for his work alone, but John Arcudi and colourist Dave Stewart pull the package together. If you are a fan of horror or supernatural stories, please buy this wonderful book. You will not be disappointed.

An Excellent Story and Value Oct. 5 2011

I recently received a $50 gift card and went looking for something to purchase. I ended up picking up BPRD volumes 1-2. These were an outstanding value! Priced well, and an excellent story and art.

These books follow the rest of the BPRD. Johann, Liz, Abe, and the rest are still saving the day even without Hellboy. And it is outstanding.

A Fantastic Collection Oct. 10 2013

If you aren't already a fan of B.P.R.D., this isn't the place to start, and you should begin with Volume 1; much of the narrative will be, if not inscrutable, more than a bit hazy. With that out of the way, this collection includes everything from The Dead through The Black Flame. If you haven't caught up with the series, this is absolutely the best way to experience this stretch, which includes some of my favorite arcs. Perhaps the greatest strength is that War on Frogs, a loosely related collection of stories, has been placed in the chronologically best place, making the scope of the Bureau's war against the monstrous frog cult clearer and more effectively showing the transition of the characters from field agents to de facto soldiers. Returning fans will notice that this adjustment actually breaks up The Black Flame, a bold choice that is nevertheless to the benefit of the narrative.

If you're just curious about the quality of the collection, this is as good as Volume 1. It's no larger than the trade paperbacks, but the quality is a noticeable step up. While the size won't match up, removing the jackets will allow them to more closely match the Hellboy Library Editions in appearance, if that's something you are concerned about. Finally, these editions are real tomes; if you ever wanted to convince someone skeptical of comics to give the series a shot, these massive hardcovers demand respect.

In short, these are great editions of a great series, though the contents really demand that you already be on board for the series.

If you liked the first Plague of Frogs hardcover, the second volume continues the journey and then some! It is great fun, action, humor, and storytelling from start to finish. Volume 1 might not have been enough to garner new fans into the series, but I am confident volume 2 will.

The only thing preventing me from submitting 5 stars is the art. Don't get me wrong, I think Guy Davis's style fits B.P.R.D. perfectly but I can also understand why people won't like it because it is somewhat of an acquired taste. All in all, Davis is just as big of a component to B.P.R.D. as Mike Mignola is and I am glad he is.

I honestly found myself enjoying B.P.R.D. much more than Hellboy. Nothing against Hellboy but I found the team dynamics and the more grounded plots of B.P.R.D. much more entertaining than Hellboy's wild ride through folk-lore.

Again, the physical book itself is beautiful with tons of bonus material and less than $25 for almost a 500 page book is incredible value. Can't wait for the volume 3!
Bring on the next one! Sept. 13 2011

Another awesome HC edition. In this volume John Arcudi sets up as the main series writer, as does Guy Davis as the series artist. You get two 5 issue stories, another 4 one shots and a ton of character sketches in the back. It's a big book at a great low cost.

You can really see the changes Arcudi brings to the book. We get a new team member right off the bat, several more villains and a new BPRD base of operations. My favorite story in this volume is probably Abe's story which is woven into the first story line. Mignola says some where in the book that's the last story completely written him. Arcudi brings a different dynamic to BPRD and makes it a nice subtle change from Hellboy and previous BPRD stories.
