5.0 out of 5 stars Heart-Pounding, Page-Turning Thriller Mar 19 2011
By Loves Suspense - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I've read all of Levine's legal thrillers and never expected a military action/adventure story from him, but I'm glad I took a shot with this one. Most genre fiction writers stick to familiar ground, but this one is far afield of the Miami courtrooms where Levine's Jake Lassiter roams. In fact, it's a nuclear missile silo in Wyoming that's attacked by terrorists.

Then, I read Levine's bio and realized he wrote several years for the military TV show "JAG," which was often set on aircraft carriers, submarines, etc. So, maybe it wasn't that much of a stretch. Either way, Levine has written a lickety-split, heart-pounding page-turner. A lowly Air Force sergeant has to overcome his own fears and shortcomings to stop a bunch of religious zealots from being able to launch a nuclear missile.

Levine makes it believable, scary, and fun.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible Sep 24 2012

I always thought that a writer should write about something the writer knew about. Mr Paul Levine has ABSOLUTELY no knowledge of the Peacekeeper missile, the missile systems within the USAF, nor the USAF missile command structure. He also has a disparaging and contemptuous attitude toward the military and military personnel. It was a good thing that the Kindle edition was free when I obtained this piece of trash, otherwise I would be a very upset reader. Unfortunately, I must rate this; however there are no negative stars so I must (under penalty of not having it published) rate it one.

3.0 out of 5 stars If made into a movie it would be "Direct to DVD". Feb 7 2012
By David Dalton - Published on Amazon.com

As a long time action/thriller fan (movies and books) I was looking forward to reading "Ballistic". One reviewer labeled it as "Die Hard in a Missile Silo". That's the ticket I thought! Seeing how "Die Hard" is my all-time favorite movie ever. I have a beat up paperback copy of Nothing Lasts Forever (The book that inspired the movie Die Hard) by Roderick Thorp. I plan to get this book in Kindle format as well. With that background behind me and having read the four 5-star reviews posted, I jumped into "Ballistic".

To me, it was an "okay" book. I would call it "Die Hard Lite". I am sure the author can write suspenseful novels featuring a former football player as a lawyer, but action just does not seem to be his thing. And certainly NOT military style action. My biggest gripe would be the casual relaxed (good ole boy) attitude that ALL the military characters displayed. Almost as if they were all civilians who dressed up occasionally as soldiers/airmen and just pretended to be in the military. Yes, I understood the story would be a little over the top, but I never sensed the military discipline or dedication in any of the characters. I think a 5-star rating is way too generous and even a 4-star rating would give you the wrong indication of how I feel. I think 3-stars just about sums it up pretty good. This is an average action story that if this was a movie, it would be a low cost "Direct to DVD" type movie.

To see where I am coming from, check out my other reviews and see the types of books I enjoy reading and the ratings I have posted.
