Prophets, Not CEOs,

This review is from: BROTHERS, WE ARE NOT PROFESSIONALS: A Plea to Pastors for Radical Ministry (Paperback)
John Piper has an important and biblical message for pastors in our day who all too often model their ministry after the corporate world. To those who will give him a fair listen, Piper is calling ministers back to faithful obedience to the one true chief shepherd, Jesus Christ, who promised to build his kingdom his way. Today, many (if not most) pastors are really building little empires in the name of building the kingdom and they believe that how they fulfill the great commission is largely up to them. This has lead to pragmatism and a shameless parody of the business world, where growth studies, demographics surveys and strategic planning replace faithful, prayerful, dependant obedience to God, preaching the Word, caring for the saints and evangelizing sinners. Piper issues a much needed reminder that the Bible speaks to not only the "what" of ministry but also the "how".The material in this book ought to be common sense but unfortunately the mega-church and seeker-sensitive movements, and the newer but nonetheless trendy emergent movement, continue to prove that too many church leaders think that God needs slick marketing, cultural imitation and flashy packaging (or in the case of the emergent movement, "authentic" labeling) in order to grow the church. But ministers must ultimately answer to God, not to statistics compilers, and true growth is measured by God's standards, not by ours. Piper reminds us when you do God's work in God's way you get God's results but when you try to do God's work man's way you get man's results. A must read for pastors and elders.

Rehash of Familiar Material, But Still a Good Read,

Piper's book focuses on the call to pastors to see the ministry as a calling instead of a business. While I have read similar material in other books, Piper's book is still a good read.Among the topics he covers include: 1. Do not put your trust in man. Fear God instead. While the book's contents may be familiar to several readers, it doesn't hurt to be reminded periodically of the basics, lest we stray from the faith. All in all, a good read.

Not Radical? Then Let's live this way.,

This review is from: BROTHERS, WE ARE NOT PROFESSIONALS: A Plea to Pastors for Radical Ministry (Paperback)
It made me sick to read the other reviews of this book by people who most likely struggle in the areas that Piper is calling all Pastors to engage more radically in. Like prayer, reading, etc... If more of us pastors lived our lives devoted to prayer and reading of scripture we would certainly make a mark on this world. Unfortunately most of us don't have the robust, dare I say "radical" faith that Piper calls us to and so we take our spot on the powerless sidelines of the cultural dialogue. Piper is calling us to something great if we only lived what we believe about prayer and scripture then maybe we would be empowered to engage and penetrate our hurting world. But I suppose this to will sound trite and simple to those with no character. Let's buck up, get on our horse and live like Jesus, This is what Piper is calling us to, Highly Recommended.
