AWESOME resource for all!, Nov 1 2007
We started signing with our 7 month old. But, this is by far the best book I have found yet to continue teaching our now 14 month-old ASL signs!! I only wish this book had come out sooner!!! He's just so fast with learning new signs I have a hard time keeping up with him - 16 new signs last month alone (once he mastered 4 in 1 day)!! Up till now I had been relying on the internet for the signs (but sometimes the signs were unclear), as well as Joseph Garcia's 'Sign With Your Baby' book & DVD (it's excellent, too, but there's not enough signs in it for us!). We needed more signs, more readily available! Amazon's product page states "the most user-friendly and comprehensive baby signing book available" - I definately agree!!
This book is very specific in showing you a clear black and white pic of a child doing each sign, then goes into detail to the side of each pic of exact hand shape, body space (sign produced in), movement (of body/hand/arm) and a memory aid (to help you visualize what the sign is mimicking so you can remember the signs). There's also space provided to record the date you introduced the sign and the date your child produced the sign.
It is organized into age-appropriate sections for parents - starting out signing to your infant (0-6 months), hints on when to start things such as 2-word phrases in ASL, to expanding as your child gets older - grouped into 6 month intervals all the way up to 3 yrs! Also includes tips on how to continue through life in ASL!
The last part of the book is songs to sing & sign with! There are 36 songs - each with well-known tunes! I had been singing some of these, but I will be signing along with them now!!
It's just amazing for us to watch our 3-spoken-word toddler produce signs that we can understand! It definately helps with easing frustrations! I can hardly wait to digest this excellent book!
This is not your typical ASL dictionary with excessive unusable signs for an infant/toddler - this includes ALL the signs you're looking for to communicate with them! Animals, foods, verbs (eat, jump, etc), tons of nouns (boat, book, pillow, sand) - 300+ words in total!! We plan on taking this book everywhere with us! That way when the opportunity arises to show a new sign - we'll be ready!!
You will not be disappointed with this excellent resource!!

Great book for quickly learning to sign properly with your baby!, Jul 28 2008
This book is great if you're looking for a resource to get you started with baby signing! The first few chapters give a good background to signing with babies (if you're a bit of a nerdy, research-happy mom, and you like knowing this stuff!). The book then breaks down the phases of language/communication development by baby age, making helpful suggestions for what signs might start to come in handy and how best to introduce them. I really like this approach - it's logical and methodical. Throughout the book, the author does a superbly clever job of introducing some of the signs to you, the reader, in the same method you might want to introduce them to your baby (repetition of signs for easier, basic concepts, and careful slow introduction of signs for increasingly advanced concepts). Well done!
The back of the book contains a descriptive and easy-to-read dictionary of many useful signs, and so far I have found all the signs I need that are related to my baby's main interests (sleeping, pooping, eating, bathing, playing, and much more).
I highly recommend this as a baby signing resource to all parents!

Great signing book!, Aug 25 2009
I really like this book! I bought it because of the good reviews on Amazon and didn't want to pay a ton of money to learn how to sign with my baby. This book has signs for everything! And great tools to help you remember the signs. My baby is 5 1/2 months old and I think she understands when I sign "milk" because she gets so excited. LOL. Great book if you want to try baby sign language!! (It even has how to sign all the nursery rhymes. I haven't gotten there yet but I'm working on it!)
