Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6 Seventh-grader Kristy Thomas organizes her friends into a baby-sitters club. In the course of the operation of the club, Kristy comes to terms with her mother's engagement, Stacey confides to her new friends that she has diabetes, Claudia learns to tolerate and even appreciate her gifted older sister, and Mary Anne makes some compromises with her over-protective father. All of the elements of concern to pre-teen girls (wearing the ``in'' clothes, keeping friendships stable, coping with family stresses, and trying to grow up) are here, tied to the almost universal experience of baby-sitting. Characters are not drawn with great depth, but the action is on target. A pleasant offering that will find a ready audience. Candy Colborn, Cottonwood Creek Elementary School, Englewood, Colo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kristy's Great Idea, Jun 10 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Baby-Sitter's Club #1: Kristy's Great Idea (Paperback)
Kristy Thomas starts a baby sitting club. She wants her friends Mary Anne Spier and Claudia Kishi to be in the club. Claudia tells them about a new girl named Stacey McGill that could join. She does. Kristy gets a strange phone call at one of the meetins for someone to come and baby sit two kids - but when she gets there, it's two dogs! And they act awful! Stacey acts strange. To find out why, read the book. I've read this from the library, the school library, and now I have it. I have an older one, but now they have better pictures on the cover and pictures and fill in pages, but mine doesn't have that. To tell which ones are the newer ones, they have pictures of all four girls around the side of the book. I think if you buy it here you get the newer one. I've read these so much I can read them in a day! I'm trying to read ten for summer reading, and I've read five already! And it's only been four days since summer reading started!

4.0 out of 5 stars a fun book for girls, July 8 2010

A new book cover, a new generation of readers, and The Baby-Sitters Club continues to entertain yet more middle graders with the now well-known foursome who made babysitting an adventure. First published in 1986, this series is now getting ready to take on the 21st century.

Shortly after we received this review copy, I spotted the original series in a cart with a whole bunch of used books at the Salvation Army. I piled them into a box (I almost found the complete set!) and bought them for my 9 year-old daughter, who was thrilled. She quickly noticed that, unlike the review copy, the front cover of the original Book One: Kristy's Great Idea showed a picture of the four girls, and she spent a lot of time looking at it and guessing who was who. The new updated cover is also cute.

Needless to say, my daughter really liked this book and is looking forward to reading the whole series. She liked Kristy's idea of a babysitting club and thought that was so cool. She also liked that all the four girls, Kristy, Mary Anne, Claudia, and Stacey were different from each other, yet they were good friends and had to learn to appreciate each other's differences. Although they had a fight, they made up. I certainly thought this book was perfect for my daughter's age group because the themes of friendship and creativity were strong. I can understand the appeal of this book for young girls who are tweens and ready to explore their new level of responsibility.

4.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, April 24 2010
When Kristy Thomas finds her mom struggling to find a babysitter for David Michael, Kristy comes up with the idea to start a Baby-sitters Club with her friends. One phone call soon equals four possible babysitters.

It's not all fun and games for her and her friends, however. Stacy is acting weird and seems to be hiding something from the rest of the club members. Kristy's mom is engaged and she isn't sure she will like her soon-to-be step-siblings, and Claudia keeps getting a lot of grief from her older sister, Janine, about her and her friends making too much noise during club meetings.

To top things off, their babysitting jobs force them to deal with crank phone calls, wild pets, even wilder children, and parents who don't always tell the truth. Will The Baby-sitters Club get off the ground and succeed? Will Kristy come to terms with her mother's engagement?

This is a reprint of a great book. The story is filled with memorable characters, life problems that are realistic and humorous at times, and a plot that keeps the reader interested. Those who like realistic fiction and humor will enjoy reading KRISTY'S GREAT IDEA.
