The routine explained in the book is called E.A.S.Y. (Eating, Activity, Sleeping, You). The author explains that the times of the individual elements of the routine will vary according to the baby, but every baby should have a routine if you want to have a life. Eating, Activity, Sleeping and Making Time for yourself are very well explained in the book in an easy-to-read way.
If you are breastfeeding, you may not feel any support reading this book, and I can even say that you may get discouraged reading some sections. Although I do not agree with some of the author's ideas on feeding, I would recommend this book if you are looking to establish sleep routines for your baby. I would not use this book as my only source of information on topics mentioned in the book.
Tracy had the "know-how" of calming even the most challenging infant, because she really seemed to understand their language. Because she offered strategies based on the personality of the parents as well as the temperament and personality of the baby, she offers quizes in this book to help parents identify which intervention plan would work best. Believing that babies need to become part of the family - rather than dominate it - Tracy has developed a practical program that parents can begin using at one day old.
My only criticism of this book is that there was not enough information relating to specific challenging behaviors of my 3- year-old. The title implies that this book covers issues through age 3. I found the majority of the book addresses a variety of issues focusing on babies under 2.
If you have a 2, 3, 4, or 5-year-old, I wish to recommend an A-Z pocket-sized guide I discovered in my pediatrician's office called "The Pocket Parent." This book is written entirely for parents with 2-6 year olds and offers hundreds of suggestions that focus on stopping toddler/preschooler behaviors that can drive you close to your wit's end such as bad words, biting, tantrums, sibling fights, the gimmes, morning crazies, power struggles, lying and whining. Both books address what to do in the heat of the moment as well as how to make a plan to prevent the same behavior from happening again; I found that insight very helpful. Both "THE BABY WHISPERER SOLVES ALL YOUR PROBLEMS" and "THE POCKET PARENT" are excellent additions to your home reference library.
Happiest Baby on The Block - 5 S's...easily found on YouTube and watched through tears.
Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child - Cry it out method. Let your baby cry until they barf. Not for the faint of heart.
What to expect what when you're expecting - AKA the book that will make you fear everything. Especially cat litter.
Anything by Dr. Sears - great if you plan on subscribing 100% to attachment parenting. So like if don't plan on going back to work or say, have a date night with your husband any time during the first 2.5 year of your baby's life
The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems - THE BABY BIBLE. Only book you will need. She gets it. This woman really gets it.
The ideas in the book are fine and helpful since they're all in one place but if you're breastfeeding it's a bit discouraging since she tells you everything is more difficult if you're breastfeeding. She tells you what your baby should be doing and doesn't allow for many differences among babies ie. "your 4-6 month old should be breastfeeding for at least 20 minutes"...she never tells you what to do if they're not! plus, my daughter is a very quick eater and is done a full feeding in 10 minutes. The book also made me feel like there was something wrong with my daughter because she would get tired before the 2hr slot for activity was up. She would get tired after 1.5 hours but the book insists that a 5 month old should be able to stay awake for 2 hrs and she actually tells you to force this so that she learns to follow the routine!! I'm sorry, but when my baby girl is tired I'm going to let her sleep!Read more ›
