András Schiff conceives of the Goldbergs in three rather than two large sections, and transposes certain repeats up or down the octave. Most impressive, perhaps, is the way he voices the "double-keyboard" variations in order create a similar effect from the standard modern grand. His suave, rounded sonority achieves great coloristic variety in spite of the pianist's virtual avoidance of the sustain pedal. All repeats are observed. --Jed Distler

4.0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Performance Feb 16 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is an amazing album. Andras Schiff's performance of the Goldberg's is highly unusual in that it not only transposes some of the repeats up an octave (it takes ALL repeats), but his quick tempo, highly complex interpetation leaves one almost breathless. I hold back on one star because at times it seems all too much, and i found myself hoping for a relaxed respite. All in all though, a spellbinder, more overwhelming than either of Gould's records. And God, that 25th variation!!! Perfect interpetation....

Great recording. That's all I can say. Get this one or the one on Penguin Label.
Try Glen Gould or Murray Perhia's recordings.
