Dorothea sings brilliantly, others less so. Aug. 28 2012

This volume of Bach's secular vocal works includes the two famous and widely recorded cantatas - the Coffee and Peasant Cantatas, as well as the Serenata Durchlauchster Leopold.
The wonderful German lyrical soprano Dorothea Roschmann is joined by Canadian forces with tenor Saint-Celais and baritone McMillan, as well as the Canadian instrument ensemble Les Violon du Roy.
The recording was made in Quebec in the early 1990's.
I grew up listening to the two Bach secular Cantatas here - the Peasant and Coffee. I am happy to report that Dorothea Roschmann fully met with my expectations in her performances here. Her crystalline delivery, perfect intonation and full musical intelligence all render her a top-notch performer of the three different characters in the works recorded here. The Violon du Roy give her adequate, if not really distinguished, instrumental support.
I am less happy with tenor Saint-Celais and baritone McMillan, who do not possess the same vocal calibre of Roschmann.
While Saint-Celais does not appear to own a very pleasant voice to be fully effective as the narrator in the Coffee Cantata, McMillan's timbre is not deep enough for the two Cantatas' lower range of the bass baritone roles. This is fully evident in Dein Wachstum Sei Feste, the major aria for the bass baritone in the Peasant Cantata.
Unless you can find a better grouping in these works sung by Roschmann, this is about the best you can fetch.
Outstanding Performance June 25 2013

This is a brilliant and spirited performance of my two favorite Bach secular cantatas. It ranks up there with the very best I've ever heard. Beautiful voices, and Les Violons du Roy did an outstanding job. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an exciting performance of these works.

This CD is an exceptional recording of Bach. This particular CD is one of the best performances of Bach's Secular Cantatas. We bought three, two for us and one for my wife's brother & his wife who also enjoys Bach's Cantatas.
