Two years after Two Shots comes Back in Town, a collection that remains true to Dusk's classic crooner style. The first fiery moment arrives three songs in: "The Best Is Yet to Come" is one of 10 cover tunes, a perfect showcase for the magnificent horn and string sections that Dusk and his team have brought to the mix. "Learnin' the Blues" and "Paper Moon" earn the right to similar praise, each recorded at Los Angeles' famous Capitol Records, where everyone from Dean Martin to Ella Fitzgerald laid down a host of revered hits. Most of disc's original numbers are less impressive than the timeless classics, but one song--"A Million Kisses Late"--has a rich melody and lyrical magic capable of its own lasting power. The CD also contains a handful of songs that Frank Sinatra himself covered--"As Time Goes By" and "The Best Is Yet to Come" among them--and Dusk copies Ol Blue Eyes' understated phrasing perfectly. Contemporary music fans will enjoy the disc's hidden track, a punchy cover of the Propellerheads' "History Repeating" which proves to be one of Back In Town's strongest moments. --Denise Sheppard

Entertaining.,

Two years after the release of "Two Shots", Matt Dusk gives us "Back In Town", a mix of new songs and big band classics ( "The Best Is Yet To Come", "As Time Goes By"...).I get hook from the very first song "Back In Town" which is a mix of swing and pop, and I am able to notice the quality of the work done on this album. Toronto born Matt Dusk worked with some of the most talented people in the music industry, recording in the best studios, and we are able to notice these facts.I appreciate Matt Dusk's rich and powerful voice, and the remarquable arrangements, wether he sings romantic ballads or up-beat songs. Several tracks on "Back in Town", including "Learnin' The Blues", "As Time Goes By" and "The Best is Yet to Come" are songs associated with Frank Sinatra, but Matt is adamant about putting a fresh spin on that material, he puts his own stamp on this genre. Working with a full big-band orchestra and strings, plus arrangements from Williams, Nestico and Vince Mendoza, Dusk and co-producer Sawchuk take these songs in new directions, from the Latin tinge of "More" to the playful phrasing of "As Time Goes By". Similarly, "Who's Got the Action", once popularised by Dean Martin, gets the big, brassy treatment, while "Get Me to the Church On Time" and "On the Street Where You Live" - two of Matt's favourites from "My Fair Lady" - are niceley updated. Swinging is one way to describe "Back in Town", which puts Matt firmly back in the pack of young crooners like Michael Bublé and label-mate Jamie Cullum. The songs on "Two Shots" were more on the sad side, on this album, it's the exact opposite. The majority of the songs are more about finding love, being happy and laughing, because the pendulum's definitely swingin' the other way in Matt's personal life. "We've all got our own approaches to this genre," he says. "Me? I'm not here to change the world. You could say my goal is to bring jazz a little more into the mainstream. But basically, at the end of the day, all I really want to do is entertain people." With the big, bold and defiantly upbeat "Back in Town", Matt Dusk is doing just that. One track "A Million Kisses Late" is excellent for...sing-a-long and romance...

WOW! This guy has the others (Buble & Connick) beat by miles!First, the package. It is a typical CD jewel case to start with. The liner notes are nice, gives background to the music. The notes themselves are on quality paper with a slick, shiny finish... just like the singer. Now the music. It is fantastic! It is a mix of old and new songs. The old songs featured are 'The Best is Yet to Come','More', 'As Time Goes By', 'Get Me To The Church On Time', 'On The Street Where You Live' and 'April Moon'. Quite a varied choice for a younger singer. But he pulls them off quite well. For the most part he does play them straight...with his own style. It is a nice style too...original and tailored to his voice. However, I would venture to say that his voice could most likely fit any music. Start with the rollicking 'Back In Town'. True Zoot Suit swinging jazz style anchored by Matt's voice. Great tune all on it's own. Segway into 'All About Me'... reminiscent of 60ish jazzy-folk style. Then into 'The Best is Yet to Come' and onto 'More'. This group of songs shows a more relaxed voice with music/arrangements made just for him. The effort has paid off! As with 'One Shot', the song choices aren't the typical ones making the rounds which I think is an excellent choice for Matt. Numerous good things can be said about this CD and Singer... too many to list here. Just take my word for this.... This fine young singer is worth every penny and minute of your time to listen. I will be anxiously awaiting his next CD! Congratulations Matt on another excellent release! 5 of 9 people found the following review helpful

Welcome Back Matt,

It has been over two years since Matt's CD Two Shots was released so this new offering is right on time. The first song is the title track "Back in Town" and it is really sexy and fast and shows off Matt's great pipes. "All About Me" is also a nice upbeat track. The other songs are love ballads and the somewhat comical "Get Me To The Church On Time" has Matt's own signature on it. The photography is glossy and classic much like the man himself. I highly recommend this new CD to all old and new fans of the talented Mr. Dusk.
