Banks is on holiday, headed for Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. His daughter, Tracy, home in Leeds and angry with her father, is headed for some very deep trouble. Robinson's nineteenth Inspector Banks novel is a stunner.

Handguns are illegal in the U.K., and whenever one is reported, the police swing into high gear. But things go very wrong when the police swoop down on a home in Eastvale to seize a reported handgun. In the confusion, Patrick Doyle, a former neighbour of Banks, is shot. Doyle's daughter, Erin, is to blame for the gun being in the house, and while she's in police custody, her housemate in Leeds, Tracy Banks, decides to let Erin's boyfriend know that the police have been around their place. Bad decision. When Banks returns home from holiday, Tracy is missing. And that's not the worst of it.

Robinson's latest Inspector Banks novel is a powerful story of how the volatile emotions of love and resentment can turn deadly when fear comes creeping in.

Quill & Quire

The phrase “this time, it’s personal” is among the hoariest of jacket-copy clichés, yet that’s what popped into my head after finishing Peter Robinson’s 19th Inspector Banks novel. The most recent entries in the series explored acute changes in Banks’s personal life, from the mysterious death of his brother to the ebb and flow of his romantic relationships. But before Bad Boy, Banks hasn’t been cut to the quick, nor has he acted out of such primal fury.

He is driven to greater extremes than ever thanks to the vortex of trouble his daughter Tracy finds herself in after some nasty business involving her roommate, Erin, and a charismatic young man named Jaff whom both women fancy. Following a shabby series of events involving a stolen gun and a death caused by a police Taser, Tracy and Jaff find themselves on the run. Jaff soon reveals the cruelty lurking behind his surface charm, but Tracy finds she has little choice but to stick with him.

Robinson does an admirable job describing Tracy’s confused motives and the very real danger she is in, contrasting the growing suspense of her plight with Banks’s dawning realization of the lengths he’ll go to in order to rescue her.

Whereas the previous Banks novel, All the Colours of Darkness, suffered from a plot that tended to meander, Bad Boy has a greater sense of control: the disparate plot threads fuse dramatically and dare the reader to put the book down before the dark yet hopeful ending.

Review

"Robinson deftly integrates Banks's personal life with an acute look at British attitudes about police, guns, and violence in this strong entry in a superb series."
— Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Just try putting the book down after a chapter or so: you'll have a problem."
—The Independent

"Robinson's writing is clear and clean, like a running stream. However, like a stream, there are also distortions, eddies and hidden perils at play. . . . If you like intelligent mysteries and love a good read, join me as new inductees in the Peter Robinson/Alan Banks fan club. It will be well worth our while."
—Toronto Sun

"It is this warts-and-all portrayal of lives on the brink that makes Robinson among the best there is in modern crime fiction."
— Edmonton Journal

"Once again, an experienced and accomplished writer demonstrates how even a long-established series character can grow and change as altered circumstances demand."

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointment Feb 20 2012
Format:Paperback
Bad Boy, bad plot, bad outing for Robinson! I found this book a major disappointment from Robinson. It almost seems like this book was rushed to please the publisher. The first half of the book plods along and had me wondering if Robinson was just tired of continuing this series. Some of the dialogue between his daughter and the "Bad boy" made me wonder if i was reading a Monty Python script! The last third of the book seems as if Robinson finally wakes up at his word processor as it rushes to the end. I expect better from this author but then everyone has a bad day at work.......too bad it cost me twelve bucks!! I have many of Robinson's books but another Jeckyl/Hyde effort like this and I won't bother with another!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bad Boy Jan 14 2012
Format:Paperback
I didn't read it. My husband is a collector of Peter Robinson Books.... and he was delighted to see a new one. However, the one bought through Amazon was set to a friend who is rather isolated, and another Peter Robinson fan, so seeing as I wouldn't see her until late January, I ordered her the book through Amazon as a little Christmas gift.
She was delighted, and in fact, it did arrive before Christmas.... so that was great!.

Now if you are more interested in a book review. both of these Peter Robinson fans were delighted to get a new one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dilemma Oct 4 2010
By Ted Feit TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Murphy's Law seems to apply to the premise behind this novel. After a well-earned vacation touring the U.S. Southwest and the wonders of LA and San Francisco, DI Banks finds, upon his return to Eastvale, that an old friend has died after police tasered him, Banks' daughter is missing, and everything is in an uncontrolled mess.

It starts when a former neighbor of Banks discovers a gun which had been hidden by her daughter in her bedroom when visiting her parents. The mother visits the police station hoping to discuss the situation with Banks who, unfortunately, is still away. When the police raid the house, the woman's husband dies of a heart attack after the aforementioned taser incident; Banks' daughter, Tracy, infatuated with man who owned the gun (the 'bad boy' of the title) warns him of the police inquiries and hides him in her father's cottage. And from that point on, as Banks returns, everything goes downhill.

The chase begins with Tracy's status changing from willing lover to hostage, and Banks and the rest of the police force struggling with the lack of clues as to where the fugitive and his captive are. As usual, Banks doesn't always play by the rules. But then, neither does the bad boy. Another well-written and off-beat story in the series, and highly recommended.
