4.0 out of 5 stars A Good AC/DC Record July 16 2004
Format:Audio CD
You have to give AC/DC credit, they are the only band that has been around for 30+ years and have stayed true to their sound. Most other bands who have had long careers have changed, or tried changing with the times. KISS churned out disco in late 70's with "Destiny" and went Hair Metal in the 80's with "Asylum" and "Animalize". Jethro Tull even tried updating their sound with keyboards on "A" and "Under Wraps". With AC/DC you can pull out any CD from any era and you will hear simple, great bluesy rock. The formula has never changed, and as long as AC/DC is producing music, I know the state of Rock n' Roll is in good shape. "Ballbreaker" is not their best album, but it's far from the worst. Give "Boogeyman" a listen and the title track too. Both would have been radio mainstays 20 years ago. I see they are offering used copies for under $5, you can't go wrong with that.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ballbreaker Jun 13 2004
Format:Audio CD
In over 20 years, AC/DC have never changed their minimalist, bone-crunching hard rock. During their first ten years, that wasn't a problem, since they were still finding ways to expand and subvert the pattern, but ever since For Those About to Rock, they've had trouble coming up with consistent material. Consequently, their performances tended to be a little lazy and their records didn't deliver a reliable knockout punch. Released in 1990, The Razor's Edge showed some signs of life, and their comeback culminated in the Rick Rubin-produced Ballbreaker. What makes Ballbreaker different than the albums AC/DC churned out during the '80s is simple -- it's a matter of focus. Although "Hard as a Rock" comes close, there aren't any songs as immediately memorable as any of their '70s classics, or even "Moneytalks." However, unlike any record since Back in Black, there are no bad songs on the album. Surprisingly, Rubin's production is a bit too dry, lacking the muscle needed to make the riffs sound truly earthshaking. Nevertheless, Angus Young's riffs are powerful and catchy, showcasing every element that makes him one of hard rock and heavy metal's greatest guitarists. Throughout the album, the band sounds committed and professional, making Ballbreaker the best late-period AC/DC album to date.

4.0 out of 5 stars Horribly Underrated May 5 2004
Format:Audio CD
I would classify this as a 4.5 CD, but of course, I can't do that, so I give it 4 stars. This is definitely AC/DC's most underrated album. Everybody goes nuts over Highway or Back In Black, no offense to the previous two, but this is just as good, if not better. The songs have a modern feel, but don't get me wrong, they are NOT selling out. They sound similar to their old days without sounding outdated. There are a couple of slightly weak songs, so this didn't get 5 stars, but most of them will knock you down with power. I love it all. An underrated gem.

This album was very highly anticipated after a tapeworm of hits off of previous albums. Here, Brian Johnsons vocals are low mixed, and the guitar seems to drown out everything. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Hard As A Rock
AC/DC still makes good rock music. "Hail Caesar", "Hard As a Rock", "cover You in oil", "Ballbreaker" are very much full of metal.
