A Satisfying Remake!, April 15 2009
This review is from: Ballet Shoes (DVD)
When I was young, one of my favourite movies was the 1975 film, "The Ballet Shoes". I would borrow this title from the library often, and I must have seen it over 10 times as a young girl! Years later, I had forgotten about the movie, and this movie came on television. After watching it for several minutes, I realized it was a remake of my old favourite. This movie is quite a good remake, and is a great family movie. This movie is specifically aimed at young girls, who would most likely delight in movie that focuses on young girls achieving their different dreams. With three very different main characters to represent the many interests of young girls, every girl will find something to like in this movie. Dreams of ballet, acting and flying in airplanes are just a few of the goals the characters aim to acheive in this movie. This movie also stars Emma Watson, of "Harry Potter" fame (Hermione), as Pauline, a young girl with ambitions to be an actress. Young movie watchers will enjoy seeing Watson in a different role.

Disappointing adaptation of a wonderful book, Aug 14 2009
This review is from: Ballet Shoes (DVD)
I was disappointed in this movie. Yes, it follows much of the basic plot of the book, but I thought the girls' characterizations were all terrible (blame the script). In the book, the family is very close-knit and supportive of each other, each willing at some point to sacrifice something to help the family out. In the movie, the girls, especially Posy, are very self-centred and shallow. I didn't once get the feeling that here was a close and loving family - the movie as written doesn't allow for any character development at all, in fact. And major plot points are changed for the movie - there is no Mrs. Simpson, for example, only a Mr. This is one case where the book is definitely better than the movie.

Misses the mark, July 11 2009
This review is from: Ballet Shoes (DVD)
The story opens in London in the 1930s, as an eccentric explorer (Richard Griffiths) returns from his adventures with three orphaned baby girls to be raised by his niece (Emilia Fox), while he goes off on another long trip. As the girls become teenagers, they enroll in a theatrical school hoping to earn enough money to support themselves: Posy wants to be a ballerina and Pauline (Emma Watson) wants to be an actress, but Petrova just wants to fly airplanes. Adapted from a well-loved children's book, this made for BBC film suffers from a script full of holes and poor direction. We meet a houseful of characters but never get to know any of them well. Their dialogue is lifeless and lacking in real emotion; except for the wonderful Ms Fox they merely take turns tediously reciting their lines and each scene falls flat. Emma Watson ( Harry Potter) looks nervous and awkward and her character, like the others, is superficial. She's supposed to be a great actress, but this isn't shown; Posy is supposed to be a gifted dancer, but again, we just have to take their word for it. Pauline, the aviator, is ignored altogether. Recommended only for those who enjoyed the novel.
