Klaus Schulze explains: “Ballett 3 once again features traditional instrumentalists such as [violinist/flautist Thomas] Kagermann, [Wolfgang] Tiepold and Tobi [Tobias Becker]. Obviously I could have played Tobi’s oboe or Tiepold’s cello with a sampler but it’s really something different for me when those instruments are played live as there is a wonderful interaction with my electronics. Then, you not only have the instruments but also the musicians’ egos. If I play a cello sample then I’ll do it the way I play keyboards. However, a cellist or oboist plays the ‘real’ instrument with all the subtleties that come with playing, which a sample can never reproduce. The pure sound of an instrument is not the crucial thing here however. It’s the musician’s personality that is important as it determines the character of the music.”
“The bonus track Schauer Der Vorwelt is very short compared to my other works but there was no room left for a longer track on this disc. [Klaus Dieter] Müller thinks this could have almost been a hit single and perhaps he’s right? Although I have to say that singles are not really my cup of tea, both from a performer and a listener’s point of view. As a listener I’m a long-distance runner too because I think a musician’s personality can be expressed much better on a longer piece than on a single. Anyway at least the fans once again get a few extra minutes as a bonus, which is something I care a lot about.”
Klaus Schulze first attracted attention as a member of the German progressive rock band, Tangerine Dream. Following the release of their debut LP, Electronic Meditation, he departed for a solo career. Klaus' recorded work typically features extended pieces sometimes filling an entire album built around computer-generated synthesizers and other specially programmed electronic effects. Klaus Schulze remains a cult figure in the United States, where the bulk of his prolific output has until now been available only through the import bins. He is widely considered an avant-garde mainstay as well as a founding father of both the new-age space music and electronica genres.

Different and very, very, very good,

With Ballett 3, German electronic music legend Klaus Schulze takes us on a journey to the fragility of life and the greatness of the human soul. My Thy She is a gorgeous piece of electronic music that spans over 76 minutes. Schulze alternates vocal, instrumental and vocal-instrumental dialogues almost throughout the whole track. You will love the richness of the textures, the rolling bass sounds, the angel-like voice of female singer Julia Messenger, the musicianship of the guests, the estheticism of the whole and even the metronomical play of Schulze on drums.
The only downside is the bonus track at the end: the three and a half minute piece is of a very different nature and has the effect of a bull entering a china shop. But My Thy She is well-worth the price of the album. I suggest you reverse the order of the tracks when you listen to it or skip track 2 altogheter and just let yourself be surrounded by the main track. Strongly recommended for those who enjoy lengthy pieces of music of majestic beauty and who appreciate progressive electronic music with a different touch that definitely sounds fresh (cello, oboe, Eastern influences, etc.). Rich instrumental meditation,

Klaus Schulze's "Ballett (Ballet)" suite originally appeared as part of the huge Rainhorse Records 10-CD "Contemporary Works 1" collection of 2000. The work's title is explained by the fact that this suite of compositions was originally composed in memory of the composer's mother, a ballet dancer in her youth, shortly after her death in 1998. There was never any intention at all on Schulze's part for this music to be choreographed, and there is nothing particularly balletic about any of it. The entire suite has now been re-released in a series of four discs, each available separately and with some of them having bonus track added as "make-weights" to fill out the CD medium.
This third disc of the series originally consisted of just one track, 'My Ty Shee', a massive 75-minute work that extends the theme begun with 'Getting Near' on "Ballett 1" and continued in part of "Ballett 2" and which concludes with "Ballett 4". This time, to the 'cello-playing of Wolfgang Tiepold and voice, flute and violin of Thomas Kagermann, is added a sensuous oboe contribution from Tobias Becker and additional vocals of Julia Messenger. The sheer size of the forces in this work gives plenty of scope for a rich series of musical interactions with musical ideas being passed back and forth in what sounds very much like a large scale improvisation. The concluding track is a short (three and a half minute) high-energy addition, 'Schauer der Vorwelt', a previously unreleased out-take from the "Contemporary Works 2" collection, featuring an electronic power-pulse and tortured vocals, the result of a studio collaboration with ambient electronics artist, Jörg Schaaf. I'm not entirely convinced this track sits well here, but no doubt some fans will be happy to have it, regardless. The bonus addition notwithstanding, this CD is a worthy companion to the earlier two volumes of this series and an excellent precursor to the fourth and final part. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful:

This is the one. Buy this one. The profound melancholy of Ballet 3 is one of those rare compositional gifts that leaves one pondering 'how on earth did anyone ever think of this music?' Dismally sweet chords woven deeply into the provocative rhythms and beautifully mixed instrumentals are perfect for a lonely evening or quiet drive. Not for the clinically depressed.
