If you really want to understand how FC Barcelona became the powerhouse that it currently is, Graham Hunter's book reveals all. From the youth team setup and how they train kids in the Barcelona way (really the Johan Cruyff channeling Rinus Michels Total Football way given Cruyff basically was the architect behind all this once he became coach at Barca) to getting to know the personalities of all the great products of that youth system (Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, Fabregas, Pique, Puyol, Valdes, etc.) this is a brilliant book.

The main focus is on the Pep Guardiola era and learning about him and his staff is actually even more fascinating. Most intriguing is the meeting a couple of Barca directors had with Jose Mourinho prior to Pep's hiring. It truly shows Barca is a club that finally knows deep down what it is and how to not only win trophies but play in a style that fits with their philosophy.

In addition, the color photos in this book are excellent. Check out the one of Messi wearing a mask in a youth team squad pic or of Pique wrapped in the goal netting he loves cutting down after Barca win their biggest matches.

Good if you already know the team Jan. 17 2013

If you are into European professional football, there's no way you could be unaware of the miracle that is the Barcelona team for the past 5 years or so. This book is a fascinating glimpse into the people and the system behind that miracle. The best parts are the mini-biographies of the key players and Pep Guardiola. The historical power and money struggles of the team management are less interesting but informative. The book is clearly written for the well-informed Barca follower who already know the team's style of play and its players. The writing is a bit scattered and sometimes repetitive, but at its best it manages to vividly capture the behind-the-scenes feel and humanity of the best team in world football, and leaves you with a much better understanding of why they have been so successful.

Nice book, but the ebb and flow is not smooth plus too many editorial errors March 22 2012

The book has an excellent compilation of stories and views about / from people who have made Barca the best team in the world. However, the writing style and the content organization was below expectation, and did not do justice to the amount of background work that the author must have done to put this together. There were several typos and editorial mistakes that a book of this nature cannot have. The author and the publisher should seriously think about coming out with a revised version that will take care of these errors, and maybe add something from the 2012 season, just so that it may offer some new content to the readers.

Frank Rijkaards input is demeaned July 15 2013

Well proportioned book with an interesting approach to chapters - where they are built around the outstanding personalities of the team. The development of the team pays too much attention to the Guardiola era which is its zenith but there were definitely foundations laid by Frank Rijkaard, who by bringing in Ludovic Guily, Eto'o and Deco and was prepared to play all of these relatively short guys in the same team. This philosophical strength reinforced the template.

Graham Hunter is one of my favorite soccer journalists. This book is the culmination of fcb's last few seasons through the lens of Mr.Hunter. He examines all of the aspects that contribute to fcb's greatness...the players, coach, president, and futbol base. What an inspiring book. The best soccer book I have read by far!
