Descriptions du produit

From Amazon.com

A collection of stories and essays by humorist and NPR commentator David Sedaris based upon his own experiences and the hidden perversity that can be found in Anytown, U.S.A. Here are images and blasphemies that nice people don't dare look at--blatantly exposed and told with the clear, casual voice of intimate knowledge. Sedaris' humor is born of compassion and his tales range from the sharing of cheery Christmas letters featuring infanticide, to experiences of the Gay and Famous (Charlton Heston and Elizabeth Dole, for example), to the lives of siblings named Hope, Faith, Charity and Adolph and to alcoholics and chain smokers you can laugh with.

From Publishers Weekly

'Morning Edition' commentator Sedaris presents a satirical collection of stories about contemporary American society.

2.0étoiles sur 5 If I could talk to everyone...., Sep 23 2002
Par Un client
...I would say to Mr. Sedaris, "Dave, we get it. You're gay." You don't have to be, as one reviewer put it, "a rabid homophobe" not to enjoy a fair portion of this book. The sexual content (especially early on) borders on graphic and offensive and is entirely too pervasive to be ignored.

...I would say to the people who "LOVED" this book (5 stars), I hope you saw yourself in the Malison essay. Because just because you get the joke, doesn't make it funny. And it doesn't make you any smarter, hipper, sexier, etc. To compare this book favorably to "Naked" and "Me Talk Pretty" just to prove that you "get" Sedaris, is sad. This work pales in comparison to those.

...I would say to people who have bought this, but haven't yet read it(especially Sedaris fans), it gets better after the first few stories. I was pretty sure after two stories I would never make it through. But it picked up enough to make me finish it. And, having done so, I'm not terribly disappointed.

...I would say to people who haven't read any Sedaris, not to start on this one. "Naked" and "Me Talk Pretty" are much more engaging, insightful, and entertaining. Had I started on this book, I doubt I would have ever picked up another. And I can honestly say, that would have been a shame.

5.0étoiles sur 5 More fun than . . ., Jui 20 2006
BARREL FEVER is the book that put David Sedaris on the map, along with the broadcast of the brilliant, hilarious 'SantaLand Diaries,' the autobiographical retelling of Sedaris' stint as an elf at Macy's that is a cornerstone of this collection of twisted stories. Many more treasures can be found here also. In 'Parade' Sedaris sets the absurd tone with a kiss-and-tell that reveals past relationships with the unlikeliest of lovers...a notorious former heavyweight champion and a Hollywood icon/NRA-spokesman among them. The satirical 'Glen's Homophobia Newsletter, Vol.3, No. 2,' a catty tirade spurred by misdirected affection, unrequited love, and paranoia, is a standout. Another is 'Season's Greeting's...' a brilliant account of the disintegration of a deliciously dysfunctional family upon the arrival of a half-Vietnamese ... child. I could go on and on...The inability of people to understand each other due to differences in culture, class, or education is a theme that recurs throughout these stories, as well as later stories in 'Naked' and 'Me Talk Pretty One Day'. I highly recommend all of these collections, but be forewarned - they are not for the timid. I have read and reread 'Barrel Fever' many times over the years, and it is still fresh. What really makes this book a must-read is Sedaris' original voice and pitch-perfect delivery. Audio versions of these stories are also worth exploring. You MUST also read the very funny and informative KATZENJAMMER by McCrae or the novel CHOKE by Palahniuk. Both great.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Comic Masterpiece, Juil 17 2004
Anyone who can actually sit down and read this book without laughing to the point of having tears streaming down their face and a sore stomach should really learn to lighten up and get off the prozac, because it ain't working. The opening story about his love affair with Charlton Heston, Mike Tyson, and going on Oprah is one of the funniest pieces of comedy I have ever come across. The letter read at the funeral and the disfunctional family newsletter at Christmas are two other gems from an overall jewelry case. Like the richest of desserts, the book concludes with the laugh out loud Santaland Diaries. I'm telling you--it's a perfect introduction to an amazing comedic genius. Don't pass up "Naked," "Me Talk Pretty One Day," or "Dress Your Family..." either!

David Sedaris' work as a writer is top notch. This book, however is not up there with the rest. The essays at the end of the book are the typical Sedaris gems (The "SantaLand... Lisez davantage
