Review

"No one will ever have the creative knowledge of Stephen Kittredge Cunningham, so who can be without this essential guide to bar connoisseurship - must reading and doing!" Robert Parker" --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Book Description

The bestselling bartending guide on the market is now in its tenth edition, and, still with twice the drink recipes of any other, remains the most comprehensive and user-friendly drink recipe book for the home and professional bartender. What’s new? Sake. And lots of it. Sixteen pages of the rice-based beverage. Types, serving etiquette, flavor profiles, food matching, history and lore, and much more. There’re also 150 new drinks, an expanded glossary, and Robert M. Parker’s updated Vintage Guide. The Bartender’s Black Book is now even the most environmentally conscientious bar guide with tips on how to “green” your home and/or commercial bar. Classic features: an index by ingredients, in-depth mixing instructions, metric conversion tables, a list of every possible garnish, sections on hot drinks, frozen drinks, beers, ales, lagers, and “malternatives,” and Cunningham’s “Glossary of Club, Restaurant and Bar Terms, and Slang.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this Book, April 10 2003
By A Customer
I had to write a review after reading the prior one of a man in search of a picture book. There are a plethora of [bad] picture drink books on the market. It is funny, he was looking for a common thing (a [bad] picture drink book) and he got the finest drink recipe book ever written. The author painstakingly alphabetized and reworked thousands of drinks. He threw out all the [bad stuff] and made a No [fooling] essential tool, that restaurants, bars, and liquor stores must carry (they all seem to). The book is unbiased (no liquor companies pushing their product) It lays flat so I can work and read at the same time. I own a 4th, 5th and a 6th edition and I await new editions. I have learned from them all....THE BARTENDER'S BLACK BOOK IS A 5 STAR BOOK.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bartender's Black Book 9th Edition, Jun 15 2011
A very handy and thorough guide book considering drinks are constantly being invented. It does a fairly good job of including the variation of ingredients and names for each given drink. I like the how-to-build-it type of instruction. The criticisms I have are 1) they should include the specific type of glassware in which to serve the drink 2) index tabs that stand out for even faster reference.
This is good for those just starting out in the field. The size and Cirlox binding make the book easy to carry and handle and the rigid plastic covers may help its lifespan.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a great book if..., April 22 2011
..you already know how to mix drinks. The author does a fantastic cursory look at how to do things in the beginning and then it goes straight into page after page after page of drink recipes. Which I don't mind, thats what I wanted, but theres no other direction on how to mix anything together. Then at the end someone tacked on something from a wine tasting guy, which just seemed really random and out of place. Overall if you just want recipes this is a good book go forth and get drunk!
