A basic grounding in mathematics is required of the reader, but technicalities are avoided as far as possible; thus complex calculations are omitted so long as the essential ideas remain clear. This impressive work succeeds in presenting in less than 400 pages the evolution of physics concepts from Pythagoras to the anthropic principle, including the most recent discoveries at CERN, at a level accessible to an undergraduate student. It is a valuable introduction to physics and to the history of physics as well.
