Although it's new, the book is not an original. It's a black and white scanned copy. Text and figures are perfectly legible, but photographs (originally in shades of gray) can not be seen at all (just a black rectangular stain). I would rather buy an used one. This book did not meet my expectations.

This book can be hard to follow, and it doesn't really make the processes easier to figure out. not having comprehensive solutions is a major downfall of this book since that would have been the only really useful thing to have.

Great reference for structural geology Dec 4 2008
By C. W. Hacker - Published on
Format: Paperback
The one-star rating here is unfair - the reviewer makes a valid point, but I think they may be taking the book out of context a bit.

To get the most out of the stuff in here that discusses how specifically to tackle problems, be they numerical, geometric, or something else, you need to use this as part of a university course. I am not sure if the other reviewer did so - they did mention its use as a lab manual. If they did use this as part of a class, their problem with the examples in the end of the book is their own. They should have asked the instructor for help with the problems. This is not like a basic math or physics textbook that has tons of examples with answers for you to work through.

It is instead a comprehensive manual of basic methods used in structural geology. With just this book (and a knowledge of the subject, perhaps with a regular structural geology textbook as reference) you can tackle almost any structural geology problem you can think of. It doesn't exist to handhold you through everything. It's all there, but if you don't understand something right away you need to put some effort in to figuring it out.

In structural geology-related courses I took, with certain complicated problems I had to spend hours and hours more or less simply staring at it. I would look at the problem, read through the techniques described in this book, look at the problem again, and spend a long time putting everything together in my head until it makes sense. I'm sure there are other approaches (depending on if you're good at visualizing things in three dimensions or not) but that is what worked for me. This method was also advocated (in so many words) by Gautam Mitra himself in my discussions with him (he taught the structure courses I took at the University of Rochester.)

The techniques in the book work, but for many people it is going to take a lot more effort than problem-solving techniques in many other sciences that take less time to visualize and understand.

structural lab July 5 2008
By geologist - Published on
Format: Paperback
I wish they gave more examples, worked examples, in the mechanics section of this manual. It is a good attempt but it falls short. Honestly, this is one of the better lab manuals in print at the present time, but it needs work.

Great Introduction Jan. 23 2007
By Nathan A. Stevens - Published on
Format: Paperback
Basic Methods is a valuable reference for the student and professional. The book features a large format, clear text, good figures, and is well written. My only change would be a sprial binding, allowing easier reference while working. This book is a fine introduction to the field methods of structual geology.
Horribly confusing at times. Seek a different textbook, if possible. May 23 2013

I am a recent geology B.S. graduate and I absolutely loved my major. That being said, this book was a requirement for one of my classes and I have no qualms stating how much of a headache the problems in this book were. Not because they were hard problems, but because the book does a very poor job at providing quality examples. Some of the diagrams are also mislabeled (e.g. three point problems) which literally will leave a student at a roadblock -- forcing you to find another source to teach you how to solve certain problems.

Furthermore, the appendices in the book lack randomized (or even/odd numbered) problem solutions such as can be found in most modern math, engineering, chemistry textbooks.

Bottom Line: This textbook makes learning structural geology a huge turn off.
Horrible Jan. 27 2015

I am a structural geologist. Learning material from this book is confusing, provides few examples, and makes simple problems impossible from being poorly explained. The examples are oversimplified examples. One might say that the book jumps from 0 to 100 mph without explanation. There are no solutions in the back that are provided as an example to help the student know they are doing the problems correctly.
