Good effort, July 1 2004
This review is from: Bastards Of The Beat (Audio CD)
I was just exposed to the Damnwells for the first time earlier this week when they opened for Juliana Hatfield. I'll be totally honest...I got to the show early, but before the Damnwells came on I left to go eat. I planned to come back for Julianna.
I ended up only seeing the last two songs the band performed (including Sleepsinging). I was immediately disapointed that I didn't stay for the whole set. These guys were really good.
I went over to the merchandise table and bought this CD (Julianna Hatfield was staffing the table herself...damn I love her!). I popped it into my CD player on the way home and was not disapointed. This CD is a great effort by the band. It doesn't capture all of the energy and emotion of their live performance, but studio CDs rarely do. The songwriting is quite good though I believe future efforts may be more complex as the band matures.
I can't say that this CD will stand the test of time...it gets a little tedious after awhile (as opposed to say, Sonic Youth who's better albums seem to get BETTER with more listening). That said, I do think the CD is worth your hard earned dollar if you've already acquired some of the other truly great new music out there (e.g. My Morning Jacket's "It Moves", Sonic Youth's new CD "Sonic Nurse", Doves - "Lost Souls", Badly Drawn Boy's "The Hour of Bewilderbeast", ...And you will know us by the Trail of Dead - "Source Tags and Codes", etc.).
Happy listening!

Real music for real music lovers, Jun 22 2004

Front man/writer Alex Dezen seems like one of those old souls. . . The songs on Bastards Of The Beat range from heartfelt to playful to pensive. Dezen is one of the best new songwriters for this new millennium, echoing some of the best from the last one. This record contains songs that not only come to mean something to you, but stick with you for a long time to come. I predict that The Damnwells will be around for a long time to come, too. Fans of Wilco, Ryan Adams, Old 97s, R.E.M., and John Mayer shouldn't miss out on this great CD.
