Product Description

Amazon.com

Batman Begins discards the previous four films in the series and recasts the Caped Crusader as a fearsome avenging angel. That's good news, because the series, which had gotten off to a rousing start under Tim Burton, had gradually dissolved into self-parody by 1997's Batman & Robin. As the title implies, Batman Begins tells the story anew, when Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) flees Western civilization following the murder of his parents. He is taken in by a mysterious instructor named Ducard (Liam Neeson in another mentor role) and urged to become a ninja in the League of Shadows, but he instead returns to his native Gotham City resolved to end the mob rule that is strangling it. But are there forces even more sinister at hand?

Co-written by the team of David S. Goyer (a veteran comic book writer) and director Christopher Nolan (Memento), Batman Begins is a welcome return to the grim and gritty version of the Dark Knight, owing a great debt to the graphic novels that preceded it. It doesn't have the razzle dazzle, or the mass appeal, of Spider-Man 2 (though the Batmobile is cool), and retelling the origin means it starts slowly, like most "first" superhero movies. But it's certainly the best Bat-film since Burton's original, and one of the best superhero movies of its time. Bale cuts a good figure as Batman, intense and dangerous but with some of the lightheartedness Michael Keaton brought to the character. Michael Caine provides much of the film's humor as the family butler, Alfred, and as the love interest, Katie Holmes (Dawson's Creek) is surprisingly believable in her first adult role. Also featuring Gary Oldman as the young police officer Jim Gordon, Morgan Freeman as a Q-like gadgets expert, and Cillian Murphy as the vile Jonathan Crane. --David Horiuchi

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! The Dark Knight Returns!, Sep 17 2005
By Jeff (Ottawa, Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
Watch with this attitude: "I've never seen a Batman film before. They don't exist". Reason? This new batman film, the "beginning" of a new franchise is 0% linked to the other films. Sure some Burton fans may not like that idea, but guess what? There's gonna be more from Nolan. This ain't no 'prequel'. If the sequels to this film (Nolan's future Batman films) are done right, like this one was, we'll have an amzing saga in our hands that does the Dark Knight justice. Man, oh man I can't wait for the sequel!! I wonder who they'll pick to play _____ (next villain revelaed at the end of Batman Begins. those who've seen it know the villain)

Not only do you get 2 DVDs, int his set, you also get 3 comics as a bonus! Sweet deal, eh?

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for the kiddies, Dec 9 2008
By Fred W. Armstrong (Maple Ridge, BC) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is, without question, the best film featuring Batman. This film captures the more gritty Batman that emerged with Frank Miller's Dark Knight back in the 80s. The Killing Joke, another superb graphic novel was also brought to mind with this film. If you are one of the few people on the planet that did not see the theatrical release, I won't spoil the plot, but there is a point in the film when you think it's going to end, and we'll need to see the sequel for the 'rest of the story', but the film just picks up again and the roller coaster ride continues. Heath Ledger's Joker is amazing. The new Joker is unpredictable and pure evil, in a way that is different than any other portrayal. The next strongest performance is by Gary Oldman. This fellow is a brilliant actor who brings Commissioner Gordon to life in a way that adds a great deal of texture to this new franchise. The visuals are amazing and while the film is long, the pacing was splendid, so one does not get bored. Whatever you do, do not show this to any kid under 14. The themes and relationships of the characters are not for the comic book crowd or the Saturday morning Batman cartoon watchers. This is a film intended for a mature audience that will be able to process the strong performances and writing that this film offers. One final note, didn't the Joker sound like Al Franken from the old SNL days... or is it just me?
