5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing! Sep 26 2012
By Andrew Foster TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Watched this one last night. It was great! Probably the best of the DC animated movie up to this point. A very good adaptation of the comic that it was based on. I am so happy they did this one as 2 parts. The longer running time lets the story flow right. That was one of my problems with the previous DC animated movies. They always seemed a bit rushed. Some people seem upset that it is broken into 2 parts. Don't worry about that at all. There is a natural intermission point in the story anyway, so it feels right to pause there.
My only small complaint was the casting of Peter Weller at Batman/Bruce Wayne. Don't get me wrong, he's got a great voice, but he just didn't seem to be the best choice here. He didn't put enough emotion into the voice acting for me. He seemed like he was just reading the words, rather than acting them. But it is minor. He is pretty good. Just not as good as Kevin Conroy was in the Animated Series.
Looking forward the the 2nd part very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Dark Knight Returns Sep 25 2012
This is part 1 of a 2 part animated version of the seminal Frank Miller story that redefined Batman for the 90's. It's influence helped launch Image Comics. The trailer I viewed is true to the original story with the minor difference of not having the voice over by Batman. In an interview Bruce Timm explained that because this is such an important Batman story, the production team felt it needed to be done completely. That is why it is being released in 2 parts, at approximately 160 minutes total running time. After watching Batman : Year One, (the other landmark Frank Miller written Batman story), and seeing how closely Bruce Timm and his team stayed to the original source material, I have no doubt these 2 parts will be amazing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Animated Film!! Mar 4 2013

I was never a DC fan growing up. It wasn't very cool to be into DC comics at all. However I have friend who has a comic shop and he suggested the Frank Miller Dark Knight series. This was by far the darkest comic I had ever read. This, the first of two parts, is an excellent film. It stays true to the original story (the movies changed the stories) and remains pretty dark all the way thru. My only complaint is Robin. I know she was (yes you read that right Robin is a She in this one) put in to lighten the mood of the film but I would of liked it better if her story was not so saturday morning cartoons. That character is the reason I am only giving this four stars.
The look of the film is great (well except for the opening car race). The animators stayed true to Miller's vision. Some clips of animation are copies of the covers and cells of the books.
I have always wanted a series of adult animated films. No not for nudity or anything like that. Just a film that does not tone down the stories because it is marketing it's self to children. This is the closest to that yet. I am not a comic collector and I don't go to Fan Expo (too many people) but I have enjoyed the new Batman trilogy and now this. Hopefully there will be more down the road!
