Product Description

Battle: Los Angeles is a war movie first, science fiction second. It's got it all: a burned-out retiring sergeant who gets drawn back in because, dammit, the Marines need him; the guy who's about to get married; the guy who's still a virgin; the guy suffering from shell shock and who just might crack; the newbie officer with a lot of book learning who you just know is going to freeze under pressure and have to be shepherded by that burned-out sergeant, who learned his lessons on the battlefield… and so much more. There's not a moment in this movie you haven't seen before--the only twist is that the enemy is alien, so whatever shred of concern you might have for raining heavy artillery on a fellow human being can be cheerfully cast aside. But clichés are clichés because they are efficient and effective, and despite the profound familiarity of Battle: Los Angeles, there's no denying the movie rips along (though two-thirds of the way through you may have forgotten who was the virgin and who was the shell-shocked guy--but really, does it matter?). The look owes a debt to District 9, a hand-held, vérité grittiness, with most of the CGI carefully given a dingy, dirty look so that it meshes with the urban landscape. Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight) does an impressive job of spitting out ham-fisted dialogue like he really, really means it, while the rest of the cast is suitably generic. This is an unrepentant love letter to the military; many viewers, faced with the unsettling chaos and moral ambiguities of real wars, will find this mythologizing not only soothing, but even moving. --Bret Fetzer

4.0 out of 5 stars Good mix of war and aliens, July 21 2011

This movie is basically a mix of a war movie, with an alien invasion movie. The premise is pretty neat, with aliens landing, but they're not invincible aliens, they can be shot, maimed etc. So it is a true battle.

If you like movies like Black Hawk Down, with the shaky camera and war scenes, and you like sci-fi, this will likely be a good mix for you and you'll enjoy. If you don't like the war type movies, then probably not for you. In the previews you basically see what you get

The characters are pretty good, story is decent enough to keep you interested in the movie. But the war type cinematography is what it's really about. So if you like that, then you'll enjoy. If you don't like it, best to pass on to something else

As it turns out I do like war movies and sci-fi, so it gets a good review from me

4.0 out of 5 stars This movie was fun!!, Jun 16 2011

Yes this movie is unbelievable and it is totally unrealistic but that's why we go to movies. I did not think I would like this movie but it was a lot of fun. The action starts just minutes in and does not let up until the end. Yes it has all the pro military crap in it but just ignore it. This movie is about just enjoying an action movie for what it is. Just mindless fun that kills a couple of hours. This movie won't win any oscars but it will kill some boring evenings!

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent action packed movie, July 11 2011

This movie was totally a recruitment tool. I don't mind watching movies that feature certain branches of the military but I hate how the movie takes advantage of the story to hit higher recruitment quotes especially if they are based on historic events (ie Blackhawk Down), I just find a little disrespectful.

But looking beyond that, its a pretty good action movie filmed in a very interesting "documentary" style which might turn people off but it certainly gives a battlefield perspective. The acting is almost believable; I can nitpick certain actions done by the actors (bad trigger control) and decisions made by the director (double line formation down smoke filled open streets, no overhead cover) but most would be easily overlooked by your average Joe/Jane. Like a food critic complaining about the lack of salt on a decent steak...minor issues for the hardcore but generally enjoyable.

Military buffs would enjoy this movie for all the good and bad. Action seekers will be satisfied.
