2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Stories, Sep 7 2010
By
Andre Le Blanc (Cranbrook, BC) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Battle Beyond The Sun/Star Pilot (DVD)
Allegedly inspired by a Russian science-fiction opera, "Battle Beyond the Sun" features some questionable acting and lousy special effects (the marking on the spaceship can be clearly seen shaking as if held in front of it in order to conceil something), not to mention alien creatures that, as described on the case itself, "more than vaguely ressemble human genitalia." The story is nevertheless interesting enough as two astronauts must decide whether to continue on their flight to Mars or risk everything to rescue the crew of a rival ship in distress. The bonus film is an Italian production called "Star Pilot." A small group of scientist searching for uranium deposits find a buried alien spaceship and are compelled to assist its alien occupants in not only repairing their ships but flying it back to their home world. Using scenes from "The Doomsday Machine" and the Japanese film "Gorath," "Star Pilot" doesn't seem to konw where it's going. I still believe that a distinguished director, with the help of well known actors and state-of-the-art special effects, could create something worth watching. By no means the best movies ever made, I enjoyed both of them enough for the price but would not be quick in recommending them... unless you are a devoted fans of B movies.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Nebo Zoyvot/The Heavens Call" Cormanized, Nov 30 2004
By John Dziadecki - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Battle Beyond The Sun/Star Pilot (DVD)
Mikhail Karzhukov's 1960 "Nebo Zoyvot" or "The Heavens Call" was Cormanized in 1962. The original is an artifact of the "Cold War" and needs to be restored to its original format to be fully appreciated. The original story line -- Russians helping Americans in space -- was later used to good effect in "2010". I give the original film five stars.

Corman bought the film cheap while in Europe. Coppolla reworked the Russian script into something supposedly pallatable to the American audience, added some garish monster so they could put it on the poster, reused footage to give it more length and recieved his first screen credit. Heaven forbid someone should do that to his film! But this sort of hacking was not unusual at the time as Corman (and Mystery Science Theater) fans know. Still, this DVD does have a decent transfer of the Corman version.

The second half of this double feature is an Italian sci-fi gone wrong. A generous star or so for that one.

Again, where's the original Russian film?

1.0 out of 5 stars Francis Ford Copa-ur kidding, Mar 22 2008
By Airthief "OhDopeyMe" - Published on Amazon.com
I was thinking I would watch the movie to kill some time, then my hopes were perked to actually expecting something. Frack me running! One of the worst please god tell me there is not a cult following to this flick, because the only ho joke scene was the part about the electric vaginia fighting the electric ovary? Or Fertile Egg?? Other then that, vaguely vieled social message and super cheap special effects. FFC ought to go hide his head in shame for this one.

Incase you were wondering, again. That's when this movie was made. AMAZON DOESN'T WANT YOU TO KNOW THE YEAR OF PRODUCTION ANYMORE -OR THEY ARE TOO friggin LAZY.

I guess our money's just not goodnuff.
