What an American Icon he is...& deservedly so...musicians of this calliber don't come along often...or more than that ...don't stick around but he has...he's one in a million. These are what I consider my favorite tracks on this CD!

1.All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye: OMG...what a structurally perfect love lost song......what girl wouldn't want to know some guy that could construct a song of his thoughts of their love like this one? From the beautiful guitar work and vocally beautiful performance of this song...no wonder he is so sought out by the female persuasion! Plus how he throws in that bit with the electric guitar (sounding a little like an old Beatles piece) to switch it up! Okay all I want to say is "hello"! ha! ha!

2.Who Says: I love the simplistic style of the guitar work in this song. It's one of those songs you can hear everyone chugging a brewski at the college dorm with this song on while sitting with a window open...and losing track of the need to cram for the next exam....until you just say...if I don't know it by now ....forget it! Ha! Ha! This is a more folksy approach than he usually takes on a song...nice little ditty!

3.Assassin: My favorite, favorite song on this CD. Love his vocal on it....lyrically so well written......it's a song about the reverse pull of the heartstrings....he thinks he's just going to be able to pull off another one nighter.....ahh..hold on..he found a contender.....an assassin....that for a change....pulls the love em & leave em..."tude"....but not before ..having "him" HOOKED! Ah there is irony in life sometimes! Ha! Ha! Killer song in every respect!

4.Crossroads: I cannot believe I am going to say this...being a huge...huge...slowhand Eric Clapton fan....but I prefer "this" John Mayer version of this song! YES I said it.....!!! Wow great beats....little bit of funk...what can't John do....he just does everything "right"! On this number too. I just want to get up & dance (and actually did) and shake my tail feathers! Ha! Ha! Great, great job on this classic! Bring back the "Bump" on this one!

5.Do You Know Me: Sweet, sweet, JM song here. It dawned on me when listening to this how great he is at structuring his songs..whether it's a bluesy, jazzy, rock song...doesn't matter because a great musician & singer songwriter can do it ...like in his sleep. This is such a beautiful song...it makes me want to think that love still exists out there somewhere....and how this man definetly can reflect & communicate his feelings....of the desire to be known!

Battle Studies by John Mayer
i thought his first album was good, except for a few songs. this album is better because all the songs are strong. i don't think he'll be as high on the charts with this one because the audience will be narrowed. not as mainstream. More bluesy/alternative folk in nature. mellow but lyrically mature. you have to understand this music to enjoy it, it's not meant to be like his past, it's a revolution. check it out, he has lots to say.

3.0 out of 5 stars Uhmmmm ! Wonder what went wrong......, Nov 25 2009

Being a fan of John Mayer's music for a few years, I have to regretfully state this CD is somewhat of a disappointment.

It's not a horrid CD yet neither is it outstanding.

Most of the songs bleed into one long yawn festival. Even though the intention was to produce an overall mellow groove that was relaxed, the entire CD remains too tame and very middle of the road. No song is truly outstanding and memorable.

Die hard Mayer fans may undoubtedly appreciate this release but I was anticipating more of a slight musical evolution from this talented artist.
Unfortunately, in my opinion, this is not the case with this CD - it's musically equivalent to a stagnate toilet bowl that needs to be flushed - this CD is going nowhere fast.

To be fair, the CD is "OK" at best however I doubt I shall be playing this CD over and over.

Nice clean vocals, nice clean production but clearly overall somewhat bland and below par.

When one plucks down cash for a product, the label or artist should anticipate the consumer to be selective.

I just felt I needed sleep and a bottle of Ativan after auditioning the first four tracks.
