Book Description

January 2013
Trusted counselor and bestselling author helps men identify, understand, and defeat their compulsive patterns and behaviors.

Historically, men have been in control-of nations, of wars, of commerce, of their families. Of practically everything, except often themselves. And those men who are fully in control of all other aspects of their worlds are often the ones who find themselves trapped in hidden compulsions and behaviors. From the usual suspects like pornography and gambling to those overlooked compulsions like overwork and withdrawal. In Battles Men Face, Dr. Jantz exposes the temptations that entrap good men, explains the root reasons men find themselves trapped in these behaviors, and gives them practical steps to take to overcome their unhealthy patterns. He shows them how to accept who they are (and who they're not), love themselves enough to say no, focus and build on the positive, and, perhaps most difficult, ask for and accept help.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good analysis of the problem, inadequate solution March 12 2013
Format:Paperback
Written by a Christian counselor, Battles Men Face provides a helpful analysis of the challenges men face in this world. It confronts men with the need to change, while assuring them that they are not alone. To that extent, it is valuable. I understand that the book is not just written for Christians, but it could have been better if Dr. Jantz had talked about repentance. After all, he is a Christian counselor and the biblical account of change goes beyond confession to repentance (think of Jean Valjean in Les Mis). Moreover, Augustine points out that our problem is that our loves are disordered. We must begin, therefore, not with the second greatest commandment but with the first and greatest commandment. It is only when we love God above all that we will be able to say no. Thus, his chapter on "Loving Yourself Enough to Say No" does not reach high enough. In fact,it misreads the cross somewhat. The cross does not say that we are worth loving. It says that regardless of who and what we we are, God graciously chooses to love us. That is greater news, because God's love for us is grounded in himself, not in our worth. His gracious choice to love us gives us worth. That being said, the rest of the book is instructive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book Review: Battles Men Face Feb. 5 2013
Format:Paperback
Gregory Jantz, PhD professional in psychology and counselling, presents a riveting glimpse of the internal battles that take place in the heart and mind of man. Battles Men Face explores issues such as pornography, sex addictions, anger issues, drinking problems, he dives into the causes and how the issues of the heart need to be addressed biblically before we can expect to see an authentic transformation. Truly heartfelt and convicting, I found myself reflecting a lot about my behaviour throughout my upbringing, and learning how to better understand myself and how to guide others into deliverance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great start Jan. 26 2013
By Dr. Rob
Format:Paperback
Gregory Jantz writes the book with Ann McMurray, Battles Men Face, to help men who have the courage to fight for health, as they deal with issues that they struggle with.

He not only does an excellent job of summing up the major issues men face, he also seeks to deal with why these issues are facing men, and how they can take steps to health. I very much appreciate that he (from my perspective) accomplishes this without making the sins of the flesh attractive.

The book is particularly helpful because of the reality that men often are not willing to go for help, and this book will help them to take the first steps towards health. Jantz is honest, which is helpful, and he seeks to show with stories and principles how to grow through these to help. His examples are very helpful.

I wish there was more Scripture and hope in God's help, which would have made this book more effective. As a first step, I think this book is very helpful, and useful especially for those unwilling to go for personal help. I hope that this will bring the first steps of health to those wanting to grow through some of these broken areas.

I loved the practical questions that bring a deeper authenticity to the reader!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Read that touches Every MAN. June 15 2013
By E. Howard - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Going through this period of life has been difficult (for various reasons). While in a christian book store I was again looking for guidance for men that was not scared of giving you the truth that need to be dealt with. This book was that for me. It is a book that stands on god's principles. It is a "tell it like it is" book, so if you are looking for a glamorous way out for dealing with yourself then this is not your book. Best of all it is the type of book that focuses on "you" being the catalyst to your change and not waiting on someone or something else.

This is a book that essentially touches all men, because there is something in this book that each man struggles with, and if they do not struggle with it then they could teach this to another man around them to make them better.

I hope that the author thinks of developing a course based on this material that can be used for study groups and/or self study.. He has done an excellent job on various topics that men would rather ignore. Great job.

This book digs into many of the struggles that come up in a man's life. Most men are too embroiled in the battle to be able to take the objective look that Dr. Jantz provides. Women may also gain insight into the different ways that men mentally and emotionally live and meet challenges.

My husband is reading this book and really likes it. I had originally checked it out from the public library. He was disappointed when I had to return it before he finished, so I ordered for him. He is not a big reader, so I was pleased to find a Christian book that he liked.

This is a good book for any man who is struggling or to give to any man you know who is. It is also very good to read before giving it to someone who is struggling. It helps give some insight into the issues they may be facing.
