Product Description

The second in a series designed for modellers, this is a complete guide to the German battleship "Tirpitz", from original ship to detailed model. The "Tirpitz" weighed 42,500 tonnes and was the sister ship of "Bismarck". For three years, she was based in Norwegian waters posing a contniuous threat to British convoys to Northern Russia. She only once fired her heavy guns in anger and that was during a raid on Spitzbergen in September 1943. Anchored deep in a Norwegian fjord, she was eventually sunk by high-level bombing by the Royal Air Force.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brief but fascinating - wonderful drawings, Jan 3 2000
This review is from: Battleship Tirpitz (Paperback)
This A4 paperback provides a good visual introduction to Tirpitz and some data on Bismarck. The first part includes general arrangement drawings of armour, followed by well-chosen photgraphs of the ship which show most of the details a modeller or historian would need. Some of the photographs are wrongly captioned, however, and they are not in chronological order. Some are also out of focus, but this is probably due to poor originals being used.

The drawings of the ship are of exceptionally high quality and include all deck plans, all critical sections and elevations and a set of 'lines'. Although of small scale - about 1:1000 - they are sharp enough to stand enlargement.

There are also a number of photographs of a museum model of Tirpitz, but these are not of very high quality and the viewpoints are repetitive and unimaginatively chosen.

Overall, very good value and essential for any Tirpitz/Bismarck enthusiast.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Battleship "Tirpitz", Sep 17 2010
By Thomas A. Goodwin - Published on Amazon.com
I have yet to open this book. because at the time I purchased it? I also bought it's companion book "The Bismark" also written by The same author. So this review will deal mainly with his book Battleship Bismark. The book iswritten with a flow and an ease. Which is uncommon in many authors. His books are well made works of art. And written like a Army Training Manual. he not only tells the true story behind the Bismark. But also delves into the lives and feelings of the common sailor who served upon the Bismark. Since I started reading his book The Bismark? I have not been able to put it down. So I know that this Volume "The Tirpitz" will be just as easly read and just as entertaing as a subject on Histry can be. I recomed the purchase of both books Tirpitz and Bismark as they were sister ships. But lived entirely seperate lives and deaths.
This man is a great author and his books are easly read and easy to understand.
I highly recommend both books in Harbound editions.

Thank You
