Took my breath away-made me giddy from beginning to end!!!!, Jun 14 2004
This review is from: Be My Valentine (Paperback)
When I first saw Be My Valentine and read the back of it I thought, "Hmmmm. How cute. Why not?" Little did I know that I would be embarking on one of the most wonderful novels I have ever read. I first thought that Shelby was an idiot for sticking with that moron of a boyfriend, and even considering marriage with him. But after the whole fiasco with David, I couldn't help but instantly fall in love with him. Every time he and Shelby would go out, and she'd be having mixed feelings about him, I just wanted to scream "Go for him! Go for him! You love him and he loves you, you comeplete idiot!!" When she finally told Matt that she wanted to break up, I wanted to jump for joy. The scene that completely took my breath away was when David dressed up as The Phantom of the Opera, and whisked her away to confess his love for her. If that isn't romance at it's finest, I don't know what is. My heart was pounding just reading it.
I was impressed by the Diana and Lance storyline, and found it funny that Diana was stressing about dating again at her age. And when Lance's playboy ways started to soften, my heart did too.
This book has not only provided me with wonderful and exhilirating entertainment, but made me believe that my own David Jones is out there somewhere, waiting to sweep me off my feet in the midst of a black cape and curly, brown hair. He may not be the huge hunk that Matt the jerk is, but he is a hero that any girl with a heart that needs to be loved and taken care of (and in her right mind) would die to have in her life. Whoever you are out there, I'll be waiting for you to come and find me. (Can you tell I'm a huge romantic?)
This is definitly one book I will read over and over again just to revisit Shelby and David's adventure from attraction to true soulmate love. If you are a hardcore romantic like me, buy this book! It will keep you up half the night with a smile on your face.

Rabe captures the exasperating and priceless relationship of mother and daughter, her dialogue is sharp, and she includes touches of local Seattle color to make her scenes more believable. Unfortunately, the main character of this book, Shelby, comes across as somewhat manipulative and immature. She seems totally unaware that marriage entails more than diamond rings and wedding bouquets. She's twenty-three and has a Master's degree, but in many ways her emotional age seemed to be about 16. Maybe, in her short-sightedness and lack of self-knowledge, she's not that different from many of us in real life, but when reading fiction I tend to like my heroines and heroes a tiny bit more idealized. I kept found myself thinking, "Kid, you have NO business marrying ANYONE until you grow up a little!"
Shelby's mom, on the other hand, is a great character, and the subplot revolving around her is engaging.

I recently read this book, and it was one of the best novels I have ever read. I enjoy the way that Sheila writes and I would recommend this book to anyone that likes to "curl up with a good book!"
