David McNally and Karl D. Speak bring an important topic to the forefront. Initially I started reading this book thinking that this would be completely tactical - about what to leverage to market yourself in a more positive light. Yes, Be Your Own Brand covers these topics too, but really spend most of the material uncovering the reader's real brand, values, and brand promise.

I specifically liked the model that they developed, outlining the three main components of a personal brand - being the Roles, Standards and Style. This framework helps me better understand the sub-areas to focus on developing or better articulating, or to which I need to be consistent. What I also found very useful was the Brand Value Profile - questionnaire tool used to help the reader define what their own values are. We all fool ourselves into believing we know what our values are, but how often do you clearly and articulately outline exactly what they are, and write them down. The authors challenge the reader to do just this.

Great guiding reading to help a reader put together another important piece of that career and personal business plan.

"I approached this book with great skepticism. Seeing myself as a brand was not appealing but the truth is we are all 'branded' in the eyes of others. What struck me immediately was the observation that people cannot see inside of me, they judge me by my actions. In the end I found the ideas in this book to be intriguing and compelling"

This is one of the most valuable books I've read. It's very insightful concepts and ideas inspired me to go after some long-held career goals just by using my natural abilities. Thanks to the author, it's working!
