Description

Millions of people know the stories of A.A. Milne but few people are aware that they were inspired by a real bear. Milne and his son Christopher met the real Winnie at the London Zoo in 1926. A Bear Named Winnie is based on the story of that amazing bear.

It is August 1914 and World War I has just begun. Lt. Harry Colebourn of Winnipeg (Michael Fassbender; Band of Brothers), is assigned to the Canadian Army Veterinary Corps. He and his detachment are travelling across Canada by train on their way to England. During a brief stop-over in White River, Ontario, Lt. Colebourn purchases a young female bear cub from a hunter. He names her Winnie, after his home town and, in spite of warnings from his fellow soldiers and the direct orders of his commanding officer (Gil Bellows; Ally McBeal), takes her with him to the camp where the Canadian Expeditionary Force is gathering before shipping out to England. Winnie is a breath of fresh air for the young soldiers faced with the prospect of war, and she travels with them all the way to Salisbury Plain in England. When Harry’s regiment is sent to fight in France, the young vet knows Winnie cannot go. He finds a home for her with Protheroe the Zookeeper (Stephen Fry; Harry Potter, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy), at the London Zoo, promising to return as soon as the war is over and take her back to Canada. Winnie becomes the star attraction at the Zoo. For the children of London, living in the shadow of a frightening war, Winnie becomes a symbol of friendship and hope.

Starring: Michael Fassbender, Gil Bellows, David Suchet and Stephen Fry

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely film that will make you cry, Oct 24 2009

I bought this movie for very cheap from a grocery store and didn't expect much despite respectable names like Stephen Fry and Michael Fassbender being involved.

In short, I was blown away. It was clearly not a high-budget film but it didn't need to be, set in large part in a plain with soldiers waiting to be deployed to England and then to the front lines in France.

I found myself amazed at Winnie and the interactions between the bear and the actors. I felt honestly touched and even cried quite a lot throughout the movie.

Definitely worth picking this up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Canadian origins, Nov 27 2007

Filmed entirely in Manitoba, Canada, this low-budget film concentrates on the original bear-cub Winnipeg (Winnie), which later ended up in a London, England, Zoo during WWI. This film focuses almost entirely upon the original Winnipeg Bear ('Winnie'), not the war, or A.A. Milne. Ten years later, in 1926, A.A. Milne visited the London Zoo, to create the now legendary, Winnie-the Pooh character.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 'Must Have" Movie for Winnie the Pooh Lovers!, July 28 2006
By Artist & Author - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: NEW Bear Named Winnie (DVD) (DVD)
Every family that has a child who loves Winnie the Pooh should have this movie. It is the true story of the little real-life bear that inspired the stories. There is one war scene that might be too much for younger children, but I'd think kids from five year old and up, who watch it with their parents who can reassure them if they become frightened of the war, should be able to enjoy it. There is no objectionable language or questionable behavior shown; it truly is a film that both the kids and their parents can really enjoy.

A heart warming story about the real Winnie-the-Pooh who lived in the London Zoo after her owner went to fight in the 1st world war. A film to be watched over and over again providing you have lots and lots of tissues. One of our favourite videos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Charming, Aug 28 2006
By S. Greene - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: NEW Bear Named Winnie (DVD) (DVD)
A really wonderful story about the real "Winnie". For anyone who loves Winnie the Pooh, this is a must for their library. The acting is first rate, and the movie is populated with well known British actors such as David Suchet (Hercule Poirot), Stephen Frye (Gosford Park), Michael Fassbender (Gunpowder, Treason & Plot, Hex), and Canadian Gil Bellows (Shawshank Redemption, Ally McBeal), and I forgot to mention the wonderful bear cubs, and the California Black Bear who is the grown up Winnie. A lot of love went into this movie, and it shows. The extra on the training of the bears could have been longer.
