The Bjork of Rap music,
By Elise F (Montreal, Qc, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (CD/DVD) (Audio CD)
This is one hell of an album. I do not fancy myself as a rap/hip-hop listener too much, and yet this album is so musically and lyrically rich it just elevates the style as a whole. Those who enjoys regular rap only might be turned off by this album, and if you are expecting songs similar to his "Graduation" album or older, you may be disappointed. But if you are open-minded and willing to discover an amazing artist who just busted through the walls of typical music styles, then you will love this. Production is impeccable, the wide array of collaborations strengthens the work, lyrics are very in your face and powerful, this is just refreshing compared to the crap we put up with on a daily basis (Ke$ha anyone?). I can't help but see Kanye West as the Bjork of hip-hop music, if it makes any sense. A must buy.

Great Album musically,

This 4th album is a great one musically. The only problem I have with it, as usual with Kanye, is the shallowness of the texts, which do not always contribute to the music. He is still a holier-than-thou freak who thinks he deserves a lot more than he actually does. Overall, great album, very diverse, which has definitely broken the mold of traditional hip hop. If you like music, go get it!

Nope,
This review is from: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (Audio CD)
I've listened to it numerous times now, hoping it would grow on me but it hasn't. It's not the beats - they're good. It's the lyrics. They're utterly non-sensical. Kanye now puts no effort into the lyrical content of his songs, focusing rather on the sensory overload of his production. The first half of the album is pretty good, even despite the lyrical mess, but the second half drags and I really start to get annoyed with the length of the songs, which seem to average around 6 minutes, many of which have 2-minute long outtros of guitars and drums playing. I don't think we'll ever get the old Kanye back from his first two albums. I'd even take 808s & Heartbreak over this any day, where Kanye actually had some pretty interesting things to say instead of the mindless puns and non sequitors of this album.
