Product Description

I can report that Gilmore and Apress have given the world one book that will replace many other PHP and MySQL volumes. This is one that the reader will consistently rely on and keep near to hand.

— Mary Norbury-Glaser, Slashdot contributor

I can summarize this review in nine words: If you want to learn PHP, buy this book.

— Gregg Bolinger, JavaRanch Sheriff

...an extremely detailed book.

— Richard Testani, Apple-Sauce.com

Beginning PHP 5 and MySQL: From Novice to Professional offers a comprehensive introduction to two of the most popular open source technologies on the planet: the PHP scripting language and the MySQL database server. You are not only exposed to the core features of both technologies, but will also gain valuable insight into how they are used in unison to create dynamic data-driven web applications, not to mention learn about many of the undocumented features of the most recent versions.

The first part of the book is devoted to PHP's foundational features, with special focus on those new to PHP 5, including the improved object-oriented support, exception handling, SQLite support, SimpleXML, and much more. But PHP 5-specific topics are only part of what's covered; you'll also learn about the language's core capabilities, beginning with a survey of installation and configuration tasks. Early chapters are devoted to basic PHP programming concepts such as variables, datatypes, arrays, string manipulation, and user interaction. Later chapters cover session handling, LDAP integration, the Smarty templating engine, and Web Services support.

Next up is a broad overview of the powerful MySQL database server. Among other topics, you'll learn about the installation and configuration process, datatypes, key security features, and various administration utilities. With this groundwork in pace, you'll then learn about PHP's assortment of MySQL functions, accompanied by dozens of examples depicting the creation and execution of queries. You'll also learn how to perform searches, and manage database transactions.

Whether you're a newcomer searching for a thorough introduction to these popular technologies, or a seasoned developer in need of a comprehensive reference, this book is for you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful, unorganized list of function. Not for beginners, not for pros either!, Sep 10 2006

To begin, I must cast my doubts on my fellow reviewers who also have only reviewed this book, or other apress books. This surprised me since I did indeed buy this book based on their reviews, and yet this is one of the most awful books I have read.

When a book labels itself as "from novice to professional", I expect to be taken on a tutorial, shown useful things one at a time, and building up on previous material. This book is not like that at all.

This book is just a long list of features and other things that you could find in free online documentation. It makes no sense. It gives you no exercises, no way of testing your knowledge, and it does not build on anything.

I was hoping that by the time I got the object-oriented chapters, it would show me how to put together everything I had learned to use. It did not do that. It just listed every feature one at a time, throwing in some advanced things out of context.

Other chapters just throw every advanced feature at you one by one, with a simple paragraph explaining how each feature works, with no context of what it can be used for. Furthermore, the book does not give you any way of knowing whether what you just read should be frequently used, never used. It has no practical use. It just explains features out of context, and it was simply not helpful at all. I don't think even an advanced user or someone coming from php4 would enjoy it.

I recommend you use other PHP5/mysql books or that you read the newbie php5 tutorial at zend.com instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, July 12 2004

This book was an excellent introduction to PHP 5. Coming from a J2EE background, Gilmore's precise and detailed explanations helped me understand what PHP 5 had to offer, engineer to engineer. Gilmore's book assumes that you're intelligent, and that you're interested in the details. He then explains those details in depths. All in all, an excellent book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect PHP and MySQL Book., July 12 2004
By

This review is from: Beginning PHP 5 and MySQL: From Novice to Professional (Paperback)
I just got done putting all of my other PHP developer books on the shelf. The author does an excellent job of providing rich explanations, relevant coding examples, and insight to a broad range of topics that all PHP5 developers will use. Don't get me wrong, there is no fluff in this book, its all PHP and MySQL muscle.

I'm constantly drawn back to advanced topics such as XML, LDAP, web services, SOAP, OOP in PHP5, advanced MySQL, and secure programming in PHP. Key concepts are amazingly well presented and easy to understand. This resource has already made a positive impact on how my applications are developed.

Not to take away from the beginning developer, there are chapters for warming up to PHP and MySQL. Within no time you'll be writing PHP code and have at your fingertips an excellent resource for building advanced PHP and MySQL web applications.

A+++++++ for the author.
