Yes, it's that Shania, long before she turned the country-music industry upside down. As the '80s rolled into the '90s, and she was toiling in a Canadian resort, it appears as if the making of this CD was an attempt to transform her into the new Pat Benatar, a kind of rock goddess specializing in the power ballad. That she had the voice for it is beyond doubt--her expressive singing is by far the best thing about this album. The songs (mostly cowritten by Shania and Paul Sabu) leave much to be desired, as do the generally predictable arrangements. However, as a little peek into her past, it's definitely of interest, and the fact that some of the proceeds go to charity means that it's not a complete cash in. --Chris Nickson

I disagree with anyone who have bad things to say about this CD, big time! I found out about this CD at heavyharmonies.com. I bought it in Seattle and absolutely love it. I couldn't stop playing it. "Rock This Country", eh? A number of songs just burst with energy. I think this is where "Mutt" Lange took her career based on these songs. "Wild and Wicked" and "Two Hearts One Love" totally rock. This CD gets 5/5 stars from me!!! iamCANADIAN!

5.0 out of 5 stars All I can say is *WOW* Jan 4 2000

This is one of the very best albums that I have heard in a long, long time.

She is not 'coming out w/ pop stuff'. These are recordings that were made before she even thought about singing country music. Personally, I see this as her best album, as I can not stand (flame me, if you must) Shania's lame attempt at country music. This style that she shows here is, in my opinion, much more suited to her singing style.

These recordings reflect a raw sound that takes me right back to the middle of the 1980s, a decade that has unfortunately been gone for *WAY* too long.

Shania, if you're reading, let's get back to this. This is much better than the other stuff you've released.

Your newest fan,

Matt

What a wonderfully indulgent CD this is! No, it's not what you'd call a masterpiece, and we probably shouldn't hold our breath until it's bestowed any industry honors, but really, who cares anyway? It's a fun piece of music, plain and simple. The songwriting is fairly pedestrian, but Shania has the ability to make nearly any song sound decent. Before hearing this CD, I really hadn't known what a versatile voice she has. In terms of vocal technique, she's really one in a million. I definitely recommend this CD to all of her fans. The "music aficiando" would probably snub it, and the journalists might just call it trite, but when it really comes down to it, their opinions are meaningless. It's the opinion of the fans that really matters, and it seems that the consensus is that Shania Twain does her thing with soul, sincerity, and a slew of talent.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not What I'd Expected
This is not the Shania who's music I know and love. I'm very hard pressed to recognize her voice in any of the tracks, and this is more like rock & roll from the mid-80's than... Read more

"Beginnings" completes my purchase of all of Shania's albums so far. I would rate it #2 behind her masterpiece album, "Come On Over." Why? Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Proves the multi-talentedness of Shania Twain
Very cool album, first of all. The songs on it remind me of many of my favorite artists from the 80's; for example, both mixes of 'For The Love Of Him' are very much like something... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting contrast to her current work
The main reason Shania Twain is such a success is because she has arguably the best producer on the planet, Mutt Lange, manning the boards. Read more
