Fifteen years laterlong after shed hitch-hiked to Los Angeles, long after shed worked nights to put herself through college, and long after shed written her first best seller, No Place For FamilyJacqueline is persuaded to go back to the tiny town of Pine Springs after her fathers death.
The quick trip shed envisioned for the funeral turns into weeks as she learns her fathers business is suddenly hers to manage. And she is also again face-to-face with the woman who, as a teen, had been Jackies first crush. She and Kay had been inseparable as kids, and later as teens. They find themselves falling back into their old habits, and Jackie is soon fighting the same feelings shed had when she was seventeen.
But living behind the pine curtain, Kay is afraid of her love for Jackie, afraid of what her family will say, afraid of how the town will react. Jackie refuses to hide, refuses to crawl back into the closet, so once again, she leaves Pine Springs . . . alone.
Will Kay let her go? Or will Kay follow her heart?

Why Change a good thing -,
By Cila Shimon "snoopy" (Toronto, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Behind the Pine Curtain (Paperback)
I have read all of Gerri Hill's books and it's upsetting to see an author change a good thing. I thought this was a formula book. This seems to be the theme of the year for Lesbian writers - childhood friends fall in love. It was too quick with no real feelings for the characters. I felt I didn't get to know the Jackie or Kay, or really care.Hunter's Way another Hill book is an excellent book with good characters a good plot and a story that kept me interested. I wonder if the writer was just pressured to get something out as quick as possible by her editors and we the readers suffer -

A Nice Change...,
By V (Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Behind the Pine Curtain (Paperback)
A while back I wrote a review that mentioned Gerri Hill needed to change her stories up a little. I was tired of the lone-lesbian-with-a-secret theme. It was a nice surprise to find this book does have a different formula...hell, Gerri even used typically 'girl' names for her characters instead of the usual Luke, Shane, or Charlie's from previous books!"Behind the Pine Curtain" is the story of Jacqueline and Kay, childhood friends that were separated from each other when Jackie's mom found out her daughter was a lesbian. Jacqueline was sent packing, armed with a bus ticket and one hundred dollars (courtesy of mom). Some 15 years later Jacqueline (now a successful author) finds out her father has died in a car crash and his lawyer requests she return to Pine Springs for the funeral and reading of the will. Arriving back home, Jackie finds her mother's attitude toward her is unchanged, but she also finds that not all members of this small town agreed with mom's decision to send Jackie away. Kay, now divorced and running the local Hallmark store, is ecstatic to have her best friend back in town. The two are once again inseparable as they rekindle their friendship and walk down memory lane. The will is read, the friendship heats up, and the town gossips are wagging their tongues! I really enjoyed this book and actually read it twice in the same week. There was good chemistry between the characters and the storyline was both interesting and intense. Jackie's dad was no fool, and I loved how the whole business storyline unfolded. Although there wasn't a lot of sex in this book, the build-up to the sex was realistic and almost as hot as the sex itself. A great storyline and sexy chemistry means 5 stars for "Behind the Pine Curtain".

As always Gerri Hill's writing allows you to be absorbed into the character's lives, feelings, and situations. The characters of Jackie and Kay give hope that one day you may be reunited with your first love.
