I'm commenting on the Android version ( 4.2.2 HTC One X ). The iOS version probably works.

I'm a software developer. I know it's hard to develop good software on multiple platform, but this product suffer from bad software design decision and also lack of testing.

Setup: this thing creates it's own WiFi access point, on which you have to login, just to input your own WiFi router configuration parameters. Note to the product manager : go buy a Dlink Wireless Range Extender DAP-1320 and check how they implemented the default setup using the WPS button found on most WiFi routers.

You should only have to press the WPS buttons on the router and this switch. That's it. Package a small card with a matrix code, S/N and random password. The smartphone could simply scan the matrix code to access the device once the blue led is on, then you input the default password. For device without camera, the user would type-in the S/N manually. You can keep your complex setup when WPS button fails.

It took me half an hour navigating through WiFi disconnect / reconnect / factory reset to finally connect this thing to the internet.

First thing it does is a 10 minutes long firmware update and the WeMo app literally tells you to go play Angry Birds. I was the Angry Bird when I read that. 10 minutes for a firmware update, no wifi router takes 10 minutes to update, but this thing really requires 10 minutes.

Once updated, the interface to setup the rules in broken, inputting my location is tedious and fails if the city name contains special characters. My phone has a GPS and I said yes when it asked me to share my location, and it stills ask me for the city name.

To this day, I was never able to "save" the rule. The "save" button doesn't work.

This product (the HW switch itself) is well made, easy to install and at times works like a charm. But just because it is working today doesn't not guarantee it will work tomorrow. Just because you can control it from within your home does not guarantee it can be controlled remotely (or vice versa) . The problem lies with the software that drives (the firmware) the device and the app that controls it. One update of one or the other and your device may be rendered (in part or entirely) useless until they patch the latest release which can take months. If the device worked fine before the last update there is no option to roll back to the previous working version. The mobile app software (v1.6) has not seen any significant improvements in well over one year. Despite claims of new enhancements and fixes, this app (v1.6) performs no better now than the Beta app well over 1 year ago. Without a solid app controlling this device, this good HW is pretty much useless.

This product is not backed by competent support. If you run into any problems their answers are the same regardless of the situation. You are given 3 tips. Factory reset the switch, re-install the software and be sure to update software to the latest version (ironic, since it was the latest version that caused the problem in the first place). You only hope in resolving any problems is getting assistance from other wemo users. Knowledge lies with them NOT the people paid to support it.

I own 13 of these devices and was being optimistic that as with any new HW problems will eventually be resolved and all will work as was intended. One and a half year and I have seen no progress. In fact, in several cases, progress has taking a tep backwards. If I had to start over I would look for other alternatives and run far away from this and any other wemo devices.

I am very satisfied with the WeMo products and have several installed and work well but needs some getting used to and some knowledge of how the system works but once you get the general idea it is fun to be able to remotely switch on or off from anywhere there is Wi-Fi or use a smart phone. Programming is a bit tricky and had to get some help from Belkin on some instances. The on line manual is very handy and everything is there if you have the time to read and be able to absorb the info. Still there will be some glitches but nothing is perfect I highly recommend this to the gadget minded enthusiast.

Very good plug, and lots of options for timer.
Simple to use, and especially nice when combined with Motion sensor.

Only draw back... will cut out of wifi network from time to time for no apparent reason (it's VERY close to the router, so THAT is not the reason).
Seems a shame, and the reason why I revised my review from 5 to 3 stars.

Purchased two of these and they don't stay connected to the network so don't count on them always showing available to turn on. I thought it was a router problem so replaced the router with different brand, same problem. Purchased two wall switches as well and same issue.

I have 2 wemo's in different houses. That is a frustrating thing - that they don't support multiple houses. But, the most infuriating thing is trying to get it to connect to your network. 10-15 tries, factory resetting, rebooting, reinstalling the app, over and over before finally success. Then it works okay. But, be prepared to be VERY patient - it's not easy like they advertise. Terrible design of the setup software - most frustrating product I've ever had - and I'm an electrical engineer and software developer.
