I'm a software developer. I know it's hard to develop good software on multiple platform, but this product suffer from bad software design decision and also lack of testing.
Setup: this thing creates it's own WiFi access point, on which you have to login, just to input your own WiFi router configuration parameters. Note to the product manager : go buy a Dlink Wireless Range Extender DAP-1320 and check how they implemented the default setup using the WPS button found on most WiFi routers.
You should only have to press the WPS buttons on the router and this switch. That's it. Package a small card with a matrix code, S/N and random password. The smartphone could simply scan the matrix code to access the device once the blue led is on, then you input the default password. For device without camera, the user would type-in the S/N manually. You can keep your complex setup when WPS button fails.
It took me half an hour navigating through WiFi disconnect / reconnect / factory reset to finally connect this thing to the internet.
First thing it does is a 10 minutes long firmware update and the WeMo app literally tells you to go play Angry Birds. I was the Angry Bird when I read that. 10 minutes for a firmware update, no wifi router takes 10 minutes to update, but this thing really requires 10 minutes.
Once updated, the interface to setup the rules in broken, inputting my location is tedious and fails if the city name contains special characters. My phone has a GPS and I said yes when it asked me to share my location, and it stills ask me for the city name.
To this day, I was never able to "save" the rule. The "save" button doesn't work.Read more ›
This product is not backed by competent support. If you run into any problems their answers are the same regardless of the situation. You are given 3 tips. Factory reset the switch, re-install the software and be sure to update software to the latest version (ironic, since it was the latest version that caused the problem in the first place). You only hope in resolving any problems is getting assistance from other wemo users. Knowledge lies with them NOT the people paid to support it.
I own 13 of these devices and was being optimistic that as with any new HW problems will eventually be resolved and all will work as was intended. One and a half year and I have seen no progress. In fact, in several cases, progress has taking a tep backwards. If I had to start over I would look for other alternatives and run far away from this and any other wemo devices.
But the main issue is that all three of them emit a high-pitched whining noise. I'm going to hang on to them since my main use for them was to control my lights while travelling. But I will not be able to keep them plugged in while I'm at home because the noise is just too irritating.
Had trouble since Daylight Savings time started and new firmware was downloaded. Emailed and recieved answer from wemo very quickly. They are working on it. Switches work, but time is screwed up - they come on too early. This is no reflection on the seller. WeMo seems to be working on it and replys to my emails. I'll update if they dont fix it.
