5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant fusion of breakbeat and middle-eastern flavors, Sep 13 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Bellydancing Breakbeats (Audio CD)
Turkey's Oojami are absolutely at the top of the heap when it comes to integrating Arab and middle-eastern melodies, rhythms and textures into modern electronic breakbeat. Every track on this CD is excellent. Great dancing AND listening album. Can't wait for their next release.

Warning: May be inappropriate for American belly-dancing classes, LOL.

Oojami - 'Bellydancing Breakbeats'...
I love Oojami's ingenuity in mixing Mid-East beats with electronica!!! I feel they are pushing boundaries in Middle Eastern music while retaining classic Middle East instrumentation mixed in with the electronica beats... Here's my breakdown track by track...
1) My fave track - hot Mid-East beats that keeps you moving from start to finish... I first heard it on "Bellydance Superstars"...
2) This is a trippy track I love that has some amazingly beautiful flute music floating over it at different interludes throughout...
3) This track serves up wonderful Mid-East beats over a constant danceable electronica beat with ethereal vocals interspersed throughout...
4) This track gets you moving from it's first beat to it's last...
5) This downtempo chill track has a beautiful vocal intro...
6) Another mello track with beautiful instrumentation blended perfectly with the electronica beats...
7) This track picks the beat back up a little with it's more upbeat ecstatic beats...
8) I love this track's breakbeat style that pushed Mid-East music boundaries... I heard it first on "Desert Roses & Arabian Rhythms II"...
9) A more ethereal downtempo breakbeat track to chill to...
10) This track serves up a d'n'b downtempo style to chill to...
11) This track continues pretty much in the same mode as #10...
12) This track picks the beat back up a little with it's more upbeat ecstatic beats with otherworldly vocals mixed in...

13) This is a very chill track with nice drumming underneath it...
14) This track has a very exotic intro into a more downtempo breakbeat mode...
15) This is a very beautiful ethereal chill track...

All in all, I loved this cd... It has a mixture of different style tracks - downtempo, fast dance tracks, chill out tracks - that all retain a Mid-East home base of beats/feel

1.0 out of 5 stars Repetitive, boring and not danceable, Jan 2 2003
By
This review is from: Bellydancing Breakbeats (Audio CD)
As a fan of contemporary Middle Eastern pop music, I bought this cd with an eye towards using it in dance performances. Unfortunately, I was completely disappointed. Most of the cuts are mindless and annoyingly repetitive. They are not at all catchy and certainly do not make me want to jump up and dance. Rather, they make me want to get a refund for the good money I spent on this album. Almost none are suitable for a performance of any type. They remind me of rave music, which may be fine for some, but I can't even stand to have this thing playing in my car while I drive. Please take the time to listen to the samples Amazon has up: the songs don't get any better.
