From Booklist
After long collaborative labor on the Thieves' World series, Abbey works solo again in this workmanlike fantasy featuring court intrigue, war, family feuds, sorcery--in short, all the things that, for quite a large number of people, make fantasy worth reading. The plot is classic, though with a few original twists, and is executed with consistent competence and very superior characterization--always a strong point in Abbey's work, whether in fantasy or horror. Eminently successful at the basic task of keeping the reader turning pages, and a good addition for most fantasy collections.
