4.0 out of 5 stars I would've given it five stars, but..., Mar 9 2002

...it seems redundant after listening to their "Silence Is Sexy" album. "Berlin Babylon" and "Befindlichkeit" are both alternate instrumental versions of "Die Befindlichkeit des Landes", which is also on here as well as on "Silence Is Sexy". "Beauty" is an alternate instrumental version of the song by the same title on "Silence Is Sexy". True, those are good songs and so is the other new material on here: "Der Engel der Geschichte" sounds like a spoken word piece done by a German woman in the middle of a brewing storm. The two "Glas" songs feature, not surprisingly, a lot of breaking glass (something that Einstürzende Neubauten must have down to an art at this point in their career). Blixa Bargeld doesn't chime in until near the end with "Architektur ist Geiselnahme" and then again on "Die Befindlichkeit des Landes". While this is an excellent album, I would caution those who are not hardcore collectors to just stick to buying "Silence Is Sexy" rather than paying the high import price for "Berlin Babylon" because there is not many new songs here.

5.0 out of 5 stars musical chiaroscuro -- new buildings, future ruins, Nov 14 2001

DUring its 20 years in extstence, the Einsturzende Neubauten project [pun not intended] has mastered the arts of raucous noise, silence, & the nuances between. BerlinBabylon finds them composing utterly minimalistic, cerebral music in a neoclassical & avant-garde way only EN could pull off how they have. Here, they build on the sediment of their past accomplishments to arrive somewhere very new, for themselves & for the music world. & their vehicle is genius. The 3rd song features a helicopter. The 5th features Beethoven. If you're familiar with Silence is Sexy, I hope you'll appreciate that Die Befindlichkeit des Landes from that is also all over this album. If I had to compare BerlinBabylon to former releases, which is impossible to do fully, since it's a very progressive development, the best I could do would be to say that 5 on the Open-Ended Richterscale, Haus der Luge, & Silence is Sexy had the seeds of it, but when those CDs were made, the seeds were only seeds & had yet to take root & blossom into this concrete architecture. You do know a sunflower seed when you see one, but the sunflower itself is not yet visibly manifest in it. It's also like trying to describe the Sphinx by examining a single one of its bricks. Buildings built with buildings...

5.0 out of 5 stars my favorite neubauten, Mar 4 2003

They want it to be repetitive. That's the compositional idea. It feels completely natural, this music, so natural that I try to concentrate on it & it just slides into my unconscious until it ends & I come back to reality. Nothing else so far in their career is so minimalistically pure. This cd has a few repeated themes & new ideas that work synergistically in different ways. The textures EN works with here are perfect. The feeling of the cd is wonderful. Getting Silence Is Sexy will not have the same effect as this. But if you have silence Is Sexy first then you'll already know some rhythms they use here, which I think they want you to do.
