Review

“As the obesity epidemic spreads across the world and parents become more concerned than ever with what to put in their children’s mouths, The Best Homemade Baby Food on the Planet takes a lot of the guesswork and frustration out of this important parenting task. It is a must-have for parents and grandparents alike.”

-Victoria McEvoy, M.D., Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and Medical Director and

Chief of Pediatrics at Massachusetts General West Medical Group

“Tina Ruggiero and Karin Knight have compiled an amazingly beautiful cookbook that shows you how easy it is to make healthy and attractive food for even the pickiest of little ones. The Best Homemade Baby Food on the Planet guides you through the first foods to finger foods and beyond with style and ease.”

-Robin Elise Weiss, L.C.C.E., C.L.C., mother of eight and author of

The Complete Illustrated Pregnancy Companion and The Better Way to Breastfeed

“This well-written and highly attractive book surpasses the traditional expert advice on the nutritional content and preparation of healthy foods by invoking a developmental approach to infant nutrition. The reader will not only learn how simple it is to make their baby's meals at home, but also understand the developmental and physiological rationales for healthy food choices. This is anticipatory guidance on infant nutrition at its best!”

-Paul H. Dworkin, M.D., Professor and Chair of Pediatrics at the

University of Connecticut School of Medicine and

Physician-in-Chief of the Connecticut Children's Medical Center

“Making your own delicious and nutritious baby food could not be easier as this lovely book explains. I can’t think of a better or more enjoyable way to start a baby on a lifetime of happy and healthy eating exploration than to mash and puree your way through every one of these recipes. You will want to eat these foods too!”

-Marion Nestle, Ph.D., Professor of Nutrition, Food Studies,

and Public Health at New York University, and author of What to Eat

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but don't agree with all recipes Feb. 18 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I've only just begun to use this book, but I am mostly happy with it. The information provided (I.e. Tips on how to start feeding, etc) were really helpful. The recipes are easy to follow and progress in complexity as the child ages. My biggest critique is that the authors too often suggest to use juice in the recipes. Young babies do not need that extra sugar. They have not acquired a taste for it yet. I was very surprised that as a dietitian, the author would recommend adding sugar in the form of juice during the early stages of feeding. Otherwise, I'm quite impressed with the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Favourite of Many We Bought Jan. 2 2013
Format:Paperback
I was determined to do all homemade baby food for my son, and so I purchased several babyfood books. This was one of our favourites.

I am puzzled by the one somewhat negative review, saying the recipes were one-dimensional and only for starters. The book progresses through complexity and age of little one, in order that you can progress with your cooking as your baby matures. My little one ate these recipes until well after one year old, by which time we were using the more complex, heavy stews, etc. His favourite was a rice, bean, cheese, yogurt concoction, the name of which escapes me at the momemt. So easy to make, and I swear the kid ate ten pounds a week of that stuff!

I would make large batches of most of the recipes, and then freeze in ice-cube trays. When meal-time came along, I would just pop out some cubes, heat in microwave, and it was so quick and easy.

I also liked the detailed nuritional info too, which helped me to make sure his diet was balanced and high fat/high calorie (he was a small baby and we were always trying to fatten him up, and I'll tell you it worked with this book). My husband made many of the recipes as well, and this was his favourite book too.

Honestly, I was sad when our son finally grew out of baby food!

Pretty good cook book although they use butter for a lot of infant recipes. I don't really like that. I find that there are good recipes online.
