Product Description

The J. Geils Band were one of the most popular rock & roll bands in America during the '70s. They had no trouble packing out arenas as they churned out their unusual mix of greasy covers of obscure R&B, doo wop, and soul tunes. The band had a distinctive style, catchy R&B-based rock tunes like "Give It To Me" and "Musta Of Got Lost". The early 80's saw the release of the bands biggest hit that entered the UK chart at number 3 "Centerfold". Soon after the release of "Centerfold" the band spilt up and went their separate ways. Capitol. 2006.

A good single disc collection of their best work. They were a good live rock and roll band and some of the tracks here are live but are very good versions. The biggest hits have the studio versions (except "I Do" because the hit version was live).

I removed one star because although the remastered sound is good, it's too compressed and so it's somewhat loud and the full dynamics have been squished a bit.

They have at least 2 other single disc hits collections, each with less songs. This CD has the best tracks from both of those, IMO, but the other CD's are both older and so they probably do not have the remastered and compressed sound.

Best of Cd's are hard to profile because there is literally NO new material on them...What is there to say the ground has already been covered and in most cases the takes are poorly done. This is not that case, the takes are great and the compilation is good, even the liner notes are good and illustrate the later part of the bands life together. The "WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO" is discussed and as far as J Geils is concerned they treated their demise as a business decision. They broke up while they were on top, not when they had been playing lounge acts for 5 / 10 years. I believe that was a smart thing to do, we have all seen the other side of that coin to much these days, the middle aged pot bellied rock and rollers back together to play a "REUNION" tour and embarrassing themselves terribly. Can you imagine the Bay City Rollers back together for a REUNION tour; it gives me the shakes. J Geils were a top notch blues and Rock Band they took their lumps and they went out like winners first class in my book

HASH(0x9acd7c18) out of 5 stars Because it includes "Come Back" and "Angel in Blue" Sept. 23 2007
By Jeff Pearlman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Rhino's 2-disc set left off two songs I really enjoyed. Though they weren't the biggest hits of the group's EMI years, "Come Back" (#32, 1980) was a sharp rock/disco hybrid and "Angel in Blue" (#40, 1982) was a nice slow song about a lady "who never had dreams, so they never came true." I didn't say they're classics, just that I liked them.

The down side is that 2 of the band's 3 biggest chart hits on Atlantic (Must of Got Lost and Lookin' For a Love) are presented in live versions. This is a one-disc collection that's pretty full, however (74 mins.). There wasn't enough room to show off the band's live prowess and still include every studio hit. And the live versions of Lookin' For a Love and Must of Got Lost are really good. Recommendation: enjoy the live stuff here and spring for the other "Best of". (The one with the bowling pins.)

HASH(0x9acd7c6c) out of 5 stars On The Mark April 5 2006

Much better track selection and sound than Flashback and more concise than the box set. Finally a Best Of that is not missing key tracks. Good liner notes too. Highly recommended.

HASH(0x9acdf0c0) out of 5 stars Buy this CD June 22 2013

I bought the CD...but I heard a friend that they bought the mp3 and did not get all the songs from the CD.
The CD is exactly from the album plus a few extras. This is by far the BEST J.GEILS CD. It has all their hits plus...The live songs are their best, they are what was played on the Radio, not the studio versions in which some reviewers have suggested. You need the live introductions to Whammer Jammer, Looking For a Love and Must of Got Lost. They are what make the songs that much better. BUY THIS CD.

HASH(0x9acdf0a8) out of 5 stars Do Not Purchase the MP3 Download of "The Best of J. Geils Band". March 3 2012
By musicman37 - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
For those who aren't paying attention, the physical CD gives you five Atlantic hits in addition to the EMI stuff.

This isn't the first time I've seen that you get less on an MP3 download on Amazon, and since these days people tend not to sweat the details, then moan when they realize the rip-off, I wanted a warning to appear in print, since Amazon merely reprints the CD reviews on the download page.

Or purchase the download if you don't care about the earlier material. I'm just trying to point out the differences in
what you'll be purchasing.

HASH(0x9acdf570) out of 5 stars My Kids Like This CD (I do too!) Aug. 28 2006
By Randy Neal - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
If you are over 35 years old you will remember about 75% of the songs on this compilation. I purchased this CD because my two boys have heard "Centerfold" on the radio and love to sing along. They don't understand the lyrics (not yet anyway,..too early for that conversation) but you have to admit the refrain is infectious. This is a must have CD for "road trips" and/ or decade theme parties (70's and 80's). Not a 5 star from me due to sound quality of live selections.
