I fell in love with Astrud Gilberto's soft gentle voice the first time I heard Girl From Ipanema on the radio back in the sixties, and still feel the same way about her today. Unpretentious and raw in a little-girl kind of way, she remains the voice of Brazilian Samba to me. Perfectly complementing her voice is the lazy saxophone of the incomparable Stan Getz and various soft-strumming gut string guitarists. I have bought many cds over the years, trying to find all my favourite Astrud songs, but dearly wish that THIS one had come out sooner---- because they are all on this one! A true "Best Of" cd------ buy it!

Creme del e creme May 26 2006
By todd rich - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
However you slice it , Gilberto Astrud is one of the most prolific and pioneering voices in modern day music. After hearing my initial introduction of her vocals in " The Girl from Ipenema" , I became instantly infatuated with her singing. After hearing several more songs , I became instantly hooked. Labeled as the " Queen of Bossa Nova" , Gilberto Astrud transcends musical genres and captivates audiences from around the world. Astrud has influenced such reknowned artist as Sade and Sinead O'Connor. Not only is she an artist that has a captivating style that's so simplistically unforgettable....she has compiled a library of music that will influence musical generations in the future. This "millennium collection" captures the esential songs that catipulted her musical career into symbolic status. Needless to say , I highly recommend this cd.

Get ready to fall in love. May 25 2007

Romantic, jazzy, relaxing. What more could you ask for? Astrud's voice has romantic, lilting quality that is very unique. To my ear, there are a few spots where she sounds a little off-key, but for me it just adds to her charm. I could listen to this CD for hours on end - and I have. I wish I knew more about music so I knew all the right words to describe the music. All I can say is, every single song on this album is a winner, and the instrument playing is superb. You will not regret buying this CD. Ah...so nice!

Great Music, But Only 12 Songs. July 17 2013

Astrud Gilberto. The Best Of Astrud Gilberto.
This album of mostly hit songs by Astrud Gilberto has excellent songs, with the exception of the opening song called "Non-Stop To Brazil", a piece of string-laden filler. Why it was included, I don't understand, when there are so many other better songs in her songbook. Some of the other songs, like "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "My Foolish Heart" and "Misty Roses" are also burdened with the lush string backups common to the pop songs of the time. Astrud sounds much better with a small backup jazz group than a string orchestra. Sometimes, less is definitely more. This album only contains 12 songs for the current price of $11.99, while her "Astrud Gilberto Gold" album contains 36 songs for the current price of $14.76. For only another couple of bucks you get two CD's with three times as many songs, and they are both "top hits" albums from Verve. Go Figure. There is a lot of duplication between the two albums, with the only songs exclusive to this album being: 1.)Non-Stop to Brazil; 5.)Fly Me To The Moon; 6.)The Shadow Of Your Smile; and 12.)My Foolish Heart. Is it worth buying over the other album? No, unless you really have to have those four exclusive songs. Buy both, and think of this one as a backup copy.

The musicians, HER sultry voice...it is all as I remember when I was a mere child and my parents would dance around the room while she sang in the background! Lovely, simply lovely! Listen to the snippets available and be removed from the present day stress and transported to another time.

Great re-mastering of good music April 26 2014
By Lim C. Yin - Published on Amazon.com

My first encounter with Astrud Gilberto was in the movie "Jazz Set" in the early 60s, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and the first time I fell in love with the bossa nova rhythm. I got the first LP mono recording of "Getz/Gilberto" featuring the three great artists Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobin, not forgetting my favourite Astrud Gilberto. Finally with the CD - Astrud Gilberto - 20th century Masters. The recordings are more enjoyable with the superb remastering by Verve, it really brings out the CD quality dynamic range to the original recordings and Astrud's voice is simply more alluring.
I have just received the re-mastered CD of Getz/Giberto by Verve and the re-mastering is similarly fantastic.
