The Songbooks recorded by Ella Fitzgerald during the 50s and 60s make up one of the great historical landmarks of jazz. First off, they are, like the Capitol recordings by Frank Sinatra--irresistible. These are some of the best popular songs ever written, sung by one of the finest voices jazz has known. The arrangements and bands, written and led by people like Billy May, Nelson Riddle and Duke Ellington were without flaw. The tracks include one of the most expensive assemblies of jazz stars one could imagine--including the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Buddy de Franco, Ben Webster, Harry Edison, Barney Kessel, Stuff Smith, Willie Smith and Bob Cooper. Impresario Norman Granz, whose idea it was, organised the sessions without caring about the cost, and so every aspect of the recordings is the best possible. The original books spread over about 20 LPs or a dozen CDs. This CD crystallises the best, from the elegant, as typified by the heart-breaking "Miss Otis Regrets", to the frantically hot, when Ben Webster and Stuff Smith tumble over themselves on "Cottontail". Cole Porter's "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye" was a hit in 1957 that came to symbolise Ella's work for a generation. --Steve Voce

It seems unfair to give this masterful collection four rather than five stars for what can only be termed religious reasons, but there you go. An outstanding CD, capturing Fitzgerald in all her perfection. If you love her, it's all here, but I find myself wishing she put more personality, more emotion, more soul into her music. In that spirit, I take one star and give it to Sarah Vaughan, my favorite jazz vocalist of them all.

It has been awhile since I have read all of the wonderful reviews for this CD. As the man who chose the songs, sequenced them and wrote the album notes, it is one of the high points of my career that so many of you love listening to this CD as much as I did making it. It was indeed a difficult assignment, narrowing down all the songs from Ella's songbook series to just these, but I hope I put in something for everybody. I agree that as a collection, there is no better representation of the best of singing, songwriting and musical arranging available. Before I sound egotistical about it, remember that the reason the collection is so good is because Ella Fitzgerald is singing; Gershwin, Porter, Rodgers, Hart, Berlin, Ellington, Arlen, Kern and Mercer did the writing; and Bregman, Riddle, May, Strayhorn and Weston did the arranging. What could possibly be better?

This collection of songs-- the best of the Cole Porter Songbooks- is a must-have if you're an Ella fan, or just interested in Ella in general. Who can resist that lovely voice? Those wonderful songs? Ella Fitzgerald sings these songs the way they should be sung.
