Like the guy in Spinal Tap, Gary Moore has an amp that goes up to 11, and at times during the two and half hours of The Best Of The Blues you wonder if it's stuck there. Luckily episodes of thunder and lightning are interspersed with performances like "Still Got The Blues", "Need Your Love So Bad" and "Midnight Blues" on the first disc of this 2-CD set, or "Cold, Cold Feeling" on the second--calmer passages where the storm clouds yield to shafts of silver light. Disc 1 is a selection from four early-90s albums (Still Got The Blues, After Hours, Blues Alive and Blues For Greeny), with guest-spots by Albert King, B.B. King and Albert Collins, plus a concert recording of "Parisienne Walkways". Disc 2 has the same guests (though on different songs) and half-a-dozen of the same titles, but this is all unissued concert material. Live performance only stimulates Moore's tendency to skip the foreplay, producing music that is urgent, active and seething with testosterone. Great stuff for a night in with the lads. --Tony Russell

Membre fondateur de Thin Lizzy avec Phil Lynott, Gary Moore est surtout connu pour son rôle d'ambassadeur du blues électrique qu'il assume avec une virtuosité jamais prise en défaut depuis plus de trente ans. De hard blues serait-il plus exact d'écrire, tant sa guitare cisèle des riffs et des solos dans la sulfureuse tradition du heavy metal. En deux CD, The Best Of The Blues réunit le "must" du répertoire du "guitar hero" de Belfast. Sur le premier, on retrouve les titres sur lesquels il a forgé sa légende, depuis "Still Go The Blues" jusqu'à "Parisienne Walkways". Quant au second, il permet d'apprécier tout le charisme du guitariste sur scène, particulièrement inspiré dans ses reprises de "Caldonia", "Key To Love" et "Stormy Monday". Fans of Gary Moore will most likely already own his individual albums, which renders this set pretty much obsolete except for collection purposes. For the unitiated, this album is a must.Other than Peter Green in the late 60's, no other "white boy blues" guitarist can match Moore's technical prowess and sheer energy; well Johnny Winter does, so lets add "British" to the adjective list. True this is more of a blues-rock affair, but let's not split hairs. From straight out blues, to boogie, to blues-rock 'n' roll, Moore can do it all. So if you enjoy the music of performers like Savoy Brown, Johnny Winter, Ten Years After, and early Fleetwood Mac you will thoroughly enjoy this album guaranteed. Gary Moore doesn't just "honk" on bobo, he literally blows bobo away!

If you're not familiar with Gary Moore, this 2 CD album is a great place to start.The first CD is a compilation of material culled from other Gary Moore albums and includes duets with Albert Collins, Albert King and B.B. King. The second CD is a live set with more guest appearances by Albert Collins, Albert King and B.B. King. Great stuff. If you like blues guitar, Gary Moore is a guitar player you should know about. This CD is a great introduction to Moore's work. An Addition To My Original Review Above: Gary Moore died a few months back. RIP, Gary. Your music will live on.

This is a double-cd, the first cd being a studio set compiled from previous albums. It is good, even though I've heard the tracks on other albums.The second cd however is, in my opinion, a bit special.All LIVE tracks, teamed up with blues legends like Albert King, B.B King and last and certainly not least THE ICEMAN, Albert Collins. Wow this stuff is dreamy. From the first track "Caldonia" right through to the last track "Midnight Blues" this will not disapppoint.
